Sarafina! is a 1992 musical drama based on Mbongeni Ngema's 1987 Broadway musical of the same name. The film was directed by South African Darrell Roodt, written by Ngema and William Nicholson, and stars Leleti Khumalo reprising the titular role from her stage performance, Miriam Makeba as her mother, John Kani, Ngema, and Whoopi Goldberg. The plot centres on students during the 1976 Soweto Uprising protesting the introduction of Afrikaans as the language of instruction in black schools. South African producer Anant Singh acquired the film rights to the musical with the goal of making an apartheid-themed film as told from the perspective of black South Africans.
