Questions

The new quiz board is ready! Winner of the last question of last round is invited to put forward his first question:

Q 39.01

Here comes the first one. A is father of B. B is related to world-famous C. C received some prize from UNESCO. The birth place of A has one of the largest and oldest mosques in India. B is particularly popular in Pakistan and Northern India. Identify A.Goutham787 (talk) 09:36, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

Jan Nisar Akhtar? Prasad (talk) 17:39, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

No. Goutham787 (talk) 18:50, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

May be time for a clue !! Prasad (talk) 02:58, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay! Hint1: B is not a person. Hint2: A is credited to be the discoverer of D and E but the discoverer of E could be A's namesake. Goutham787 (talk) 09:21, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Amir Khusro? Prasad (talk) 14:25, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Yes. A: Amir Khusro, B: Qawwali, C: Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, D: Tabla, E: Sitar. Goutham787 (talk) 17:27, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

Q 39.02

A committed suicide because of insult in place of recognition. After many years B, who got the recognition, took off his crown and recognised A's efforts and now the world knows that A is the second in the world (that too independently, just 2-3 months of difference) to do such feat. Who are A & B and what is the feat? Prasad (talk) 07:01, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

A = Subhash Mukhopadhyay (physician) B= TC Anand Kumar

Subhash Mukhopadhyay created history when he became the first physician in India (and second in the world after British physicians Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards) to perform the In vitro fertilization resulting in a test tube baby "Durga" (alias Kanupriya Agarwal) on October 3, 1978 ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ 10:28, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Very fast Viswa, Good answer, all yours. Prasad (talk) 10:42, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Q 39.03

In a battle that was concluded by no ethical means, A was taken along with B to the far away land where C came from.

A was ordered to keep his eyes low and not to stare directly into the eyes of his rival. A man of great self-esteem, A would not yield to such orders. So, he was blinded.

Blinded A was, but confident of his talent and acumen, B managed to arrange a shooting display where A would be asked to show his ability to precisely target even without sight.

While the show was going on, B would utter another line to his poem from which the blind man would take his cue and shoot and kill C.

Fact or fiction, so says D and D is as celebrated as an epic, anyway.

Indeed, it would be B's son who would eventually conclude the last portions of the poem.

Q39.05

All right, here is the next question:

Find the missing one out. Also mention what makes them join a class of their own.

Bismillah Khan, Lata Mangeshkar, M. S. Subbulakshmi, Ravi Shankar. ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ 17:06, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Bhimsen Joshi. All of them are Bharat Ratna recipients.

Diya Kannan (talk) 00:31, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

That was almost complete. They all together form the set of only masters in music who added honour to Bharat Ratna.

So light up yet another lamp, Diya! :) ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ 04:32, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

Q39.06

We should have definitely heard of his name when we study about current India. But don't know why, we don't hear much about that mathematics wizard.

But it seems the well deserved fame of grand father is also added to his grand son's share. Identify both of them.

Is this question too crazy? No responses... Diya Kannan (talk) 03:25, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Ramaswami Iyer & Ramachandra Guha ? The question is some what deep cryptic..May be needs reframing. Prasad (talk) 06:09, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Ok....let me try to explain a clue. Black, Prince and Forever are movies.

Wild Guess, Amartya Sen? The question is too cryptic to solve fully though. Black, Prince, Forever are movies in which his daughter Nandana Sen acted in. He is sometimes referred to as Mother Teresa of economics. Goutham787 (talk) 18:53, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Yes..that's correct..one of them is Amartya Sen. Can you identify the other person also?

Diya Kannan (talk) 21:28, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Then either it could be Kshitish Mohan Sen or Kabir (music)? Prasad (talk) 05:56, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

hmm...I am terribly sorry...My mistake in interpreting the relationship...I should have said nephew instead of grand child. I was talking about Sukumar Sen and Amartya Sen. Amartya Sen's grand father was Sukumar Sen's uncle.

Sukuamr Sen was Chief Election Commissioner of India from 21 March 1950 to 19 December 1958, who made India's first general election happened. Historian Ramachandra Guha referred him as "unsung hero of Indian democracy." I think I don't need to explain about the popularity gained by Amartya Sen.

It might be the mistake I made in the relationship made the question so tricky. I apologize for the mistake.

Diya Kannan (talk) 07:05, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

Oops!! Finally the riddle is solved. Goutham, pl. post a new question ASAP. Prasad (talk) 08:59, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

Q39.07

There are three of them. If you know one, you know the other two. The eldest is also related to some pilgrimage. The second one is associated with a river which in turn is related to the above pilgrimage. The youngest has a greater significance than the others and its birth coincided with the birthday of a Nobel Laureate who might not have liked that significance. Identify the three. Goutham787 (talk) 14:10, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

Diya Kannan (talk) 22:25, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

Apologies for the delay. They are all connected to India. Clue 1: They are all geographical locations. Goutham787 (talk) 12:02, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Clarification: The birthdate is only month and date, not the year. Goutham787 (talk) 14:03, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Shipki La (Sutlej), Lipulekh (Manas sarovar) & Nathu La (Dalilama's birthday coincides)? Prasad (talk) 06:00, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Yes. Lipulekh, Shipki La, Nathu La are the only three border trade posts between India and China operating currently. After closing them during the Sino-Indian War of 1962, they are opened in 1992,1994 and 2006 respectively. Lipulekh is on the lake manasarovar pilgrimage route. River Sutlej originates near the lake and enters India from the shipki la pass. The nathu la pass was opened on the birthday of the Dalai lama and the talks between the countries leading to its opening also led to the acceptance of Tibet as a part of China by India and Sikkim as part of India by China. Sorry then, is it is Shanti Bhushan, who originally proposed the Lokpal Bill way back in 1968? Prasad (talk) 17:12, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Yes. A is Shanti Bhushan. C is State of Emergency. D is Janata Government. E is Lokpal Bill. Shanti Bhushan argued against Indira Gandhi in the case which eventually declared her election to Lok Sabha illegal. This led to protests all over the nation and then, Emergency.Goutham787 (talk) 18:08, 30 July 2011 (UTC)

Q 39.10

Alright then here is the next question: A is essentially the 2nd person from the state to win Dada Saheb Phalke Award. Although A was born in that state, A did not act in any movie of that state's official language. Identify A. Prasad (talk) 14:03, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Paidi Jairaj? But I think there is a mistake in the question, because Jairaj is effectively the third person from Andhra Pradesh to win the award after Devika Rani and B.N.Reddy (If being born in the state is the criteria for eligibility). Goutham787 (talk) 16:22, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Correct answer; i accept the mistake but the reason behind it is Devika rani just born in AP but does not belong to AP, where as BN Reddy & Jairaj Born & belong to AP. Anyhow, shoot another good one Goutham!! Prasad (talk) 16:38, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Two of the names are already there in the list of answers given here. Both of them are connected to the third person for same reason.

Diya Kannan (talk) 21:48, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

It was time for one of the most critical and responsible decisions India and her ministers had to take together. The man who said this would elaborate about the scene, later at a function where another person would be awarded the same distinction that he held (and only he until that day), during a very remarkable speech.

You may have to search elsewhere than wikipedia for the precise events. Also, the words above are not exactly verbatim. Although they carry the true meaning at every point, they were 'poetically'( :D) re-written for the question to avoid easy googling. ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ 16:33, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

Sam Manekshaw told this , likely to Indira Gandhi, in a cabinet meeting in 1971, where plans to start military help for East Pakistan was being discussed.--Dwaipayan (talk) 19:35, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
Welcome back, Dwaipayan! Great coming back with the right answer!

Yes. Sam Bahadur, the Brave told this very much to Indira Gandhi and her cabinet members. Supposedly, later, after everything was arranged to be in order, on the eve of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, on being asked by Indira Gandhi if he was ready to fight, he replied: “I am always ready, sweetie."

Please read http://parsikhabar.net/individuals/sam-manekshaw-obituary-in-the-economist/1029/ to know if this was probably strictly true.

A book published later (Field Marshal KM Cariappa Memorial Lectures 1995 - 2000, Lancer Publishers & Distributors, Delhi, 2001) quotes Sam himself according to this article: http://indianeconomy.org/2007/10/12/when-manekshaw-confronted-indiras-cabinet/ ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ 20:48, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

Over to you master, Dwaipayan!

Q 39.18

Hi everybody.

This town "A" was named after the town "B" (both are similar-sounding, but the official English spelling differs). Again, there is another city "C" which has almost same name (spelling differs slightly), but probably no link between C and B.

This town "A" is not a very notable town, and is actually a suburb of a notable city "D". This city "D" shares its name with the town "E".

Town "B": used to have a cantonment of the East India Company.

Town "E": known for a cantonment of the Indian army.

Identify all the towns.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:41, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Clue 1: The city "D" and its suburb "A" are located outside India.--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:49, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
A - Berhampore, New Zealand, B - Berhampore, India, C - Berhampur- Orissa, D - Wellington - NZ, E - Wellington Cantonment - Tamil Nadu. Nice observation Doctor! --Amondal (talk) 17:23, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
Perfect answer. Did you need the clue? Or just cracked it right away! Yeah, it was interesting to know that there is another Behrampur away in Wellington! Anyway, over to you.--Dwaipayan (talk) 19:04, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
Initially I guessed Berhampur but could not connect all these. Your clue helped me figure out all these connections. By the way, I am too busy these days. Can someone else carry over the baton please? Thanks in Advance! --Amondal (talk) 02:48, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

Q 39.19

Hyderabad. Zakir Hussain, T. Anjaiah, N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Sarojini Naidu in that order. Goutham787 (talk) 14:34, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
Correct answer, i was initially thinking about Berhampur, Orissa, then found Hyderabad also fits the bill. All yours Goutham! Prasad (talk) 15:25, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Q 39.20

Connect Elephants, Malaria and some Sidhu. Goutham787 (talk) 12:29, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi, is it Wolbachia bacteria (which infects mosquitoes, causes elephantiasis in humans and controls malaria; it was researched by Manpreet Sidhu)? Theonlynitin (talk) 04:26, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Great attempt Nitin, but I meant elephants for real and the connect itself is related to India. Clue 1: The Sidhu part, you may need to look for alternate spellings. He is famous for something in 19th century. Goutham787 (talk) 07:31, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi again Goutham, does it have anything to do with Sido (Sidhu) Murmu of the 1855 Santhal revolution , the British used war elephants and firearms to suppress the revolt but i don't know how he could be connected to malaria though. Theonlynitin (talk) 13:58, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Again, you are close. The Sido part is right. Connect has something to do with Santhals. Think of elephants in the contemporary world. I am looking for a place. Goutham787 (talk) 11:34, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Taking cue from above, is it is "The Singhbhum Elephant Reserve"? Prasad (talk) 14:03, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

No. Goutham787 (talk) 17:11, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Simlipal National Park ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 18:45, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Or may I switch my answer to another equally fitting candidate, Kotgarh Elephant reserve? ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 19:48, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Okey-dokey! It's Paralakhemundi!, at the southern tip of Orissa, famed for their Santhal craftwork on ivory called "Bone of Orissa". The town and surroundings is frequent prey for the epidemic of Cerebral Malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 20:02, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Wow. Didn't expect there are so many alternatives. I expected Simlipal National Park for answer. The connects are Celebral Malaria being prevalent in Simlipal Elephant Reserve which encompasses the Santhal tribal settlements. Post a nice one Vishwa! Goutham787 (talk) 06:02, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Q 39.21

What is it that has one head, one board and sixteen matrices that control sixtyseven? ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 13:49, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Vishwaprabha, is it Ashtapada? Nitin (talk) 15:29, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

No! It is comparatively newer and continuously striving to be as modern as possible despite it's colossal size! The numbers sixteen and sixty-seven are also being changed upward once in a while. That must be a very easy clue! ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 16:33, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
Is it is Mokshapatamu / Snakes and ladders? Prasad (talk) 16:48, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
No! ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 16:49, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
Hi again! Is it the Indian Railways which has 16 zones and 67 divisions, headed by Dinesh Trivedi, the Union Minister for Railways, and administered by the Railway Board(Transport in India)? Nitin (talk) 08:32, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Yes! You hit the nail finally! Initially, I thought it would be a very silly question. :)
Despite all the anomalies and agonies, Indian Railways is one wonderful single machinery that really circulate the blood of national integration for a great country. Its management, one of the most complicated jobs in the world, is executed through both very conventional and very modern principles. Each of the sixteen (now with some administrative additions such as Kolkatha Metro) semi-autonomous zones work in a matrix arrangement. The Only Nitin, next is your turn... ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 11:18, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Q 39.22

Thanks VishwaPrabha, that was nice! :) It was a great question actually!!

Connect: 2, 25, 86 and 91 (Hint: think Dankuni for two). Nitin (talk) 06:03, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

National Highways emanating from or passing through Kanpur?

NH-2 -Dankuni to Delhi via Kanpur

NH- 25 - Kanpur to Shivpuri/Bakshi ka Talab

NH-86 - Kanpur - Dewas

NH-91 - Kanpur - Gaziabad

ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 10:05, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Oh! Then that was a very easy one I had asked ! Yes it is right - Kanpur highways :) Now you can ask the next question ! Nitin (talk) 14:09, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks Nitin. In fact, it was the hint of Dankuni that made it too easy. ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 15:40, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Q 39.23

This one could be a little tricky. But I promise you a good reading on an eligible wiki page within the India Portal.

Yes! The elephant is right! The bull has left and the horse goes down. Now who turns up?

I expect the proper and well fitting connection/explanation as an answer. Some lateral thinking will make it easier to answer, I hope. ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 15:40, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Lion? The four animals depicting different stages of Buddha's life? Goutham787 (talk) 04:37, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

You are on the right track. (And kudos for that!). But need a little more explanation and connection to India ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 05:02, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

I could think of the Lion (in the Lion Capital Emblem of India, the 4 animals at the base: bull to the left, elephant to the right, horse to the south ('down') and so the lion turns up to the north) but Goutham has said that already I think. Nitin (talk) 08:50, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

You are right.

From: Emblem_of_India : The abacus is girded by four smaller animals - guardians of the four directions: the lion of the north, the elephant of the east, the horse of the south and the bull of the west.

Goutham just missed to point to the emblem of India and to the notion of directions (North, East, South and west) in a conventional map.

So, whom shall I credit the point? I suppose Nitin should take over. Or he may hand over the baton/point to Gautham if he wishes so? ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 09:38, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Hehehehe ... its like stealing credit from Goutham! I knew the answer but he had answered first, so it's good if he would ask the next question. Thanks Viswaprabha! Nitin (talk) 10:35, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Then so it be! Gautham, you are welcome to ask the next question. Nitin, nice goodwill from your side! :) ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 10:38, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Looks like lot has happened over the day! I have actually started the research with the articles Indian Emblem, Ashoka Pillars and Lion Capital, and confirmed the animal must be Lion. Then I overread the 'Lateral thinking' and 'fitting explanation' and tried to explain the significance of animals. Nice of you guys to let me post the next question. Will do so in next couple of hours. Goutham787 (talk) 16:39, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Q 39.24

I am Indian with significant Russian connections. My initials refer to a popular British dealing in construction activity. I maintain a relatively low profile and that could be a part of my job description. Who am I? Goutham787 (talk) 21:43, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Is it is Brahmos? Prasad (talk) 02:46, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

No. A couple of my cousins are well known and some neighbours often complain of their alleged mischief. Goutham787 (talk) 07:43, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Is it the Talwar class frigate designed by Russia for the Indian Navy and which uses stealth technology? Nitin (talk) 14:19, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

No. I am not a weapon or a weapon transporter. Try to connect the initials to that famous British.Goutham787 (talk) 14:49, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Clue: I am an organization. [You may have to look at my cousins' wikipages to find links to my page, as I told you, I maintain a low profile.] Goutham787 (talk) 14:49, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

hai Goutham,is that RAW, the Research and Analysis Wing of India, which has a collaboration with Russia,
  • relatively low profile and that could be a part of my job - since its a secret agency
  • cousins wiki page- i think the pakistan too have 'something' to do with RAW
  • initials refer to a popular British dealing in construction activity - i cant find this, i see Raw Design, but it is an architecture firm in Toronto, Canada and in Hereford, UK i see Raw Engineering, but it is a car manufacturer.

so what do you think about this?--Jenakarthik (talk) 07:59, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Very near karthik. You found the cousin! Not the answer. Goutham787 (talk) 14:44, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

There seems to be two such agencies, Aviation_Research_Centre and National Technical Research Organisation. The first one's initials can match up with http://www.arcconstruction.co.uk/. Although this possibility was lingering in the mind, I am still not sure if this fits well with the question, as the right answer. ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 15:38, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

No. The initials refer to a famous British company. The machines used are very popular in India, they are simply referred to by those initials rather than their names in many cases. I am not sure if ARCConstr. has any big base in India. Goutham787 (talk) 15:47, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
In fact, the initials are so popular that, they appear in Oxford dictionary too!Goutham787 (talk) 15:50, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Then It is JCB! Joint Cipher Bureau ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 16:06, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Oh Yes! The JCB. I did not know its existence till I was referring to its cousins, other intelligence agencies' wiki pages. JCBamford is well known for construction and demolition equipment. Goutham787 (talk) 16:14, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Thank you Gautham. In fact, JCB was the first name that occurred naturally to me in the beginning. But from your question, I understood that the name of the Indian entity had causatively arrived from a British construction co. or person (like Naturam Puri's Purico and PFE )http://www.iiar.res.in/index.php?q=node/181). However, other clues did not match up very well with those pointers. ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 16:47, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Q 39.25

This is another easy question to conclude this session of India Quiz.

Almost a decade before India acquired her independence, two young engineers arrived in an Asian city to set up their own business of importing and supplying equipments for an industry their country is famous for.

Their beginnings were so humble that they had to take turns to occupy the tiny space available in the little office room.

Wars and invasions forced them to re-orient their product line. In a way, it turned good for them, because the war provided a lucrative market where they flourished.

Over the long many years, they have evolved into a well-known international conglamorate today with their balance sheets showing up figures above billions of US $. Name the two persons who started this venture. ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 16:47, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Larsen & Toubro Goutham787 (talk) 17:07, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

That was much too easy for you, isn't it, Gautham? :)

So here you go setting up page for the next episode WP:Pinq40. Best Wishes! ViswaPrabha വിശ്വപ്രഭ (talk) 18:11, 18 September 2011 (UTC)
