- September 11: Jazz keyboardist and composer Joe Zawinul has died at the age of 75. He played alongside trumpeter Miles Davis, and became one of the earliest musicians to play jazz fusion, later co-founding the group Weather Report and winning numerous awards.[1]
- September 10 Memorabilia belonging to the late opera singer Maria Callas is to be auctioned by Sotheby's in Milan. The collection will include love letters and musical scores.[2]
- September 6: The Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti has died at the age of 71. He was one of the most popular contemporary vocal performers in the world of opera, and also sang alongside Plácido Domingo and José Carreras as The Three Tenors. For his last performance at the Metropolitan Opera he received a 15-minute standing ovation and 10 curtain calls. He died after a long struggle against pancreatic cancer.[3]
