- 27 January: A special leaders meeting of the Pacific Islands Forum, held in Papua New Guinea, sets a deadline of 1 May for Fiji to set a date for elections before the end of the year. Fiji rejects the deadline.
- 12 January: Floods in Fiji kill seven people and displace more than 9,000.
- 4 January: A magnitude 7.6 earthquake strikes the West Papua province of Indonesia, killing at least four people.
- 29 December: James Tanis wins the Bougainvillean Presidential election and will succeed Joseph Kabui, who died on June 7.
- 23 December: Fiji expels New Zealand's acting High Commissioner, Caroline McDonald. In retaliation, New Zealand declares acting Fiji High Commissioner, Cama Tuiloma to be persona non grata.
