- December 9, 1824 - Commander Antonio José de Sucre won the decisive military encounter with Spain in the Battle of Ayacucho to seal the independence of Peru and South America.
- December 17, 1996 - The Japanese embassy hostage crisis began when 14 members of the Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) entered the official residence of Japan's ambassador to Peru in Lima.
- December 24, 1971 - Flight LANSA 508 crashes en route from Lima to Pucallpa killing all crew members and all but one of 87 passengers.
