• 2003 - China Airlines flight 585 (Boeing 747) becomes the first of six Taiwanese airliners to land at Shanghai Pudong International Airport as part of The Project of Mainland Taiwanese Businesspeople Returning Home. This marked the first time in 54 years that a Taiwanese airliner was permitted to legally land in the Chinese mainland. A total of 16 chartered flights operated over the Chinese Lunar New Year until February 9. This paved the way to eventual restoration of direct flights between Taiwan and China in 2008.
