September 29

  • 1927 – A strong tornado of at least F3 (probably F4) intensity devastated more than 200 city blocks in St. Louis, Missouri and crossed into Illinois, killing 79 people and injuring 550. Damage totaled $53 million (equivalent to $930 million in 2023).
  • 1938 – Five tornadoes struck the Charleston, South Carolina area with two F2 tornadoes killing a total of 32 people and injuring 100. The deadlier of the two crossed James Island and the Ashley River, killing 27. Many were crushed as buildings collapsed. The other killed five as it destroyed poorly-built homes in Charleston. Three other tornadoes from this event were rated F1.

September 30

  • 1959 – Hurricane Gracie spawned several tornadoes in Virginia and South Carolina. An F3 tornado destroyed a duplex in Crozet, Virginia, killing ten of the eleven people inside. One person was killed in another home, and four other people were injured. Another F3 tornado destroyed small buildings and the elementary school in Stanardsville, Virginia, killing one person and injuring nine.

October 1

  • 1977 – A tornado outbreak affected parts of the Ohio Valley and Tennessee. An F1 tornado destroyed a mobile home near Corydon, Indiana, killing one occupant and injuring another. A short-tracked F3 tornado destroyed 12 homes on the northwest side of Cincinnati, Ohio and injured 17 people. An F2 tornado injured 16 people in the destruction of trailers and barns in Piney Grove east of Lancaster, Kentucky. An F1 tornado injured 10 people in and near Blountville, Tennessee
  • 1989 – A small tornado outbreak affected the Southeastern United States. An F2 tornado hit a trailer park in Funston, Georgia, killing two people and injuring twelve in the destruction of nine mobile homes. A church was also destroyed.
