edit- 1853 – The Lake Erie, Wabash and St. Louis Railroad, a predecessor of the Wabash Railroad, is incorporated in Indiana.
- 1890 – Pennsylvania Railroad subsidiary Ohio Valley Railway reorganized as the Pittsburg, Ohio Valley and Cincinnati Railroad.

edit- 1914 – Passenger trains of the Canadian Northern Ontario Railway begin using the Grand Trunk Railway's Central Station in Toronto.
- 1921 – The Railways Act 1921 receives royal assent in the United Kingdom, merging the country's 120 railway companies into 4 (The Big Four).
- 1933 – New York City Subway's IND Crosstown Line opens between the Queens Plaza and Nassau Avenue stations.

edit- 2001 – The Udarata Menike express passenger service from Kurunegala to Alawwa, Sri Lanka, derails on newly installed track, killing 15 passengers in what has come to be known as the Kurunegala train crash.
