- 1870 – The Texas legislature approves the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad (MKT) charter, which was originally granted by Kansas, allowing the MKT to build into the state.
- 1873 – The first prototypes of the San Francisco cable car system are tested at the top of Nob Hill by Andrew Hallidie.
- 1939 – John W. Snow (pictured), Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CSX Transportation, then United States Secretary of the Treasury, is born.
- 1980 – A bomb explodes in the waiting room at Bologna Centrale railway station in Italy killing 85 and injuring more than 200 others. See: Bologna massacre.
