- 1866 – The first demonstration runs are held on the Mount Washington Cog Railway, in New Hampshire, as Peppersass, the road's first steam locomotive, hauls a platform of passengers up a 0.1 mile (161 m) section of track.
- 1907 – The Quebec Bridge (pictured), the largest cantilever bridge in the world which now carries CN and VIA trains as well as three highway lanes, collapses during construction, killing 76 construction workers.
- 1979 – Bangor and Aroostook Railroad discontinues hauling potatoes; it was for this business that the railroad painted many of their boxcars in a distinctive red, white and blue "State of Maine" livery.
- 2006 – Amtrak announces the selection of Alexander Kummant to succeed interim president David Hughes as president.
