- 1854 – The Brooklyn City Railroad, the oldest streetcar line in Brooklyn, New York, opens for passenger service.
- 1884 – The first Dow Jones average, the predecessor of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, is published; of the eleven companies included in the average, nine of them are American railroads.[1]
- 1938 – The steam locomotive LNER 4468 Mallard sets the world speed record for steam locomotives at 126 mph (203 km/h).
- 1995 – The extension of Minsk Metro's Avtozavodskaya Line connecting Frunzenskaya to Pushkinskaya (pictured) opens.
