1857 – Norwegian railway director Carl Abraham Pihl is demanded by a Royal Decree to instruct a terrain investigation of the area along the river Drammenselva from Drammen to Randsfjorden.^[1]
1863 – The Parliament of Norway passes the construction of what would become the Randsfjorden Line with 65 against 44 votes.^[1]
1878 – The government of France enacts a law to create a public loan (redeemable revenue 3% in 75 years) to finance the completion of the French rail network.
1881 – The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad connects to El Paso, Texas.
1884 – The Pine Bluff and Swan Lake Railway, in Arkansas (later to become part of the Cotton Belt Railroad), is incorporated.

1905 – The Pennsylvania Railroad inaugurates the fastest freight train schedule in the world, operating between Chicago, Illinois, and New York City in 18 hours.
1917 – The 104th Street and 111th Street stations on New York City Subway's BMT Jamaica Line open.

1944 – Michael R. Haverty, president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway 1989-1995 and president of the Kansas City Southern Railway 1995-present, is born.
