- 1860 – The Staten Island Railway is extended to Tottenville.[1][2]

edit- 1912 – Chicago, Lake Shore and South Bend Railroad (predecessor of the Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad) begins "one-car" passenger service directly to the Chicago Loop.[3]
- 1916 – Lake Superior and Ishpeming (LS&I) 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type No. 29(Or No. 14 at the time) was pulling an iron ore train down a 1.6% grade outside of Negaunee, when it and several of it's hoppers rolled down on their sides on a steep embankment. The reason for this significance is because No. 29 is now the only LS&I steam locomotive to ever experience a catastrophic accident and still live to pull another train.

- 2005 – Chris Green, CEO of Virgin Trains since 1992, announces that he will join the Board of Directors for Network Rail; his resignation from Virgin is scheduled for September 2005. Green began his railroad career with British Rail in 1965.[5]
- 2008 – An unexploded bomb from World War II is found near where the District and Hammersmith & City lines cross the Prescott Channel, not far from Bromley-by-Bow tube station, causing disruption to trains.[6]
