edit- 1869 – The Ft. Wayne, Jackson and Saginaw Railroad opens between Jackson and Reading, Michigan.[1]
- 1879 – The North Pennsylvania Railroad begins operating the Philadelphia, Newtown and New York Railroad, a subsidiary of Pennsylvania Railroad.
20th century
edit- 1939 – The Syracuse Lines of New York State Railways are reorganized as the Syracuse Transit Corporation.
- 1940 – The Newark City Subway in New Jersey opens an extension from Heller Parkway to Grove Street.[2]
- 1950 – A collision between two Long Island Rail Road commuter trains near Richmond Hill, New York, kills 79, and injures hundreds more.[3]
- 1995 – The last train crewed by a Guard on Melbourne's suburban train network runs; after this date all suburban trains are driver-only operation.
- 1997 – The British freight company Railfreight Distribution is acquired by EWS as part of the privatisation of British Rail.
21st century
edit- 2002 – The Toronto Transit Commission opens the Sheppard Subway, connecting the Sheppard-Yonge and Don Mills stations.[4]
- 2014 – The Oakland Airport Connector, an automated guideway transit system connecting Oakland International Airport to the Bay Area Rapid Transit network at Coliseum Station in Oakland, California, opens in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, replacing the AirBART shuttle service.[5]
