August 1,
- 1982 - Typhoon Bess made landfall on southern Honshu as a minimal typhoon. Rainfall from Bess caused over 1,000 landslides and killed 59 people.
- 1989 - Hurricane Chantal (pictured) makes landfall over in southern Texas at Category 1 intensity, causing $100 million in damages.
August 2,
- 1922 - A typhoon devastated Shantou in Guangdong, China, killing 50,000 people.
- 2012 - Typhoons Saola and Damrey (pictured) affect Taiwan and much of China with damages up to $700 million.
August 3,
- 1899 - The 1899 San Ciriaco hurricane develops in the central Atlantic Ocean. The cyclone will later make landfall in Puerto Rico, killing over 3,000 people and lasting for 31 days in total, becoming the longest-lived Atlantic hurricane in recorded history.
- 1988 - Hurricane Fabio (pictured) reaches Category 4 major intensity with winds of 220 km/h (140 mph) while nearing the Central Pacific basin.
August 4,
- 2002 - Tropical Storm Kammuri made landfall to the east of Shanwei, China killing over 100 people.
- 2015 - Typhoon Soudelor (pictured) reaches peak intensity with 10-minute sustained winds of 215 km/h (130 mph) and a pressure of 900 hPa. Soudelor impacted China and caused $3.72 billion in damages and killed 40 people.
August 5,
- 1982 - Hurricane John (pictured) reaches Category 3 major hurricane intensity with winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) while entering the Central Pacific basin.
- 1990 - Hurricane Diana made its first landfall on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula as a tropical storm. Diana killed 139 people and caused about $90 million of damage in Mexico.
August 6,
- 1959 - Hurricane Dot made landfall on the island of Kauai, Hawaii as a Category 1 hurricane, causing about $6 million of damage throughout the state.
- 2009 - Hurricane Felicia (track pictured) reaches peak intensity with winds of 230 km/h (145 mph) and a minimum pressure of 935 hPa. Felicia affected Hawaii after a few days causing minor damages.
August 7,
- 1980 - Hurricane Allen (pictured) reached its peak intensity in the Caribbean Sea with winds of 305 km/h (190 mph) to the south of Cuba. Allen killed over 230 people and caused almost $2.5 billion of damage along its track.
- 1993 - Tropical Storm Bret struck Venezuela, killing a total of 213 people.
- 2012 - Typhoon Haikui reached peak strength before landfall causing about $2.09 billion in damages.
August 8
- 1975 - Severe rainfall from Typhoon Nina caused the Banqiao Dam in Henan, China to fail with the resulting floods killing tens of thousands of people. Many more died in subsequent epidemics and famines.
- 2023 - Hurricane Dora passed south of Hawaii, causing an increase in trade winds that triggered the deadliest wildfires in state history.
- August 9
- 1976 - Hurricane Belle reached its peak intensity with a central pressure of 957 hPa (mbar) off the East Coast of the United States. Belle caused $100 million of damage across the Mid-Atlantic and New England states.
- 1988 - Tropical Storm Beryl made landfall over in southeastern Louisiana with winds of 85 km/h (50 mph). One person was killed and damages were only at $3 million.
- 2012 - Hurricane Ernesto (pictured) made landfall in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.
August 10,
- 2006 - Typhoon Saomai (pictured) made landfall on the coast of Zhejiang, China as a violent typhoon. Saomai killed over 400 people and caused $1.5 billion of damage.
August 11,
- 1856 - The 1856 Last Island hurricane made landfall in Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane, obliterating Last Island (a.k.a. Isle Dernière). At least 200 people were killed.
- 1987 - Typhoon Betty (track pictured) reaches peak intensity with 1-minute sustained winds of 260 km/h (160 mph) with a pressure of 890 hPa while making landfall over northern Samar.
- August 12, 2004 - Typhoon Rananim (pictured) reached its peak intensity to the east of Taiwan with 170 km/h (105 mph) winds. Ranamin later made landfall in Zhejiang, China killing 115 people and causing over $4 billion in damage.
August 13,
- 2004 - Hurricane Charley (pictured) made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane near Punta Gorda, Florida. Charley caused over $16 billion in damage.
- 2009 - Tropical Storm Maka enters the Pacific typhoon basin from the Central Pacific.
August 14,
- 1970 - Typhoon Wilda made landfall on western Kyushu, Japan as a typhoon with 170 km/h (105 mph) winds. Wilda brought heavy rain to Japan which killed 11 people.
- 2013 - Typhoon Utor (pictured) makes landfall over in Yanjiang, Guangdong as a Category 2 typhoon. Damages in China topped ¥13.4 billion (US$2.2 billion).
August 15,
- 1979 - Typhoon Irving reached its peak intensity with 160 km/h (100 mph) winds to the east of China. Irving made later landfall in South Korea, killing 150 people and causing over $10 million of damage.
- 2009 - Hurricane Guillermo (pictured) reaches its peak intensity with sustained winds of 205 km/h (125 mph) and a minimum pressure of 954 hPa.
August 16,
- 1971 - Typhoon Rose reached its peak intensity with a central pressure of 952 hPa (mbar) in the South China Sea as it approached the Chinese coast. Rose severely affected Hong Kong and killed a total of 110 people.
- 2009 - Hurricane Erika (pictured) makes landfall over in northeastern Mexico at peak strength as a Category 1 hurricane. Two people died with only $10,000 in damages.
August 17,
- 1969 - Hurricane Camille made landfall on the Mississippian coastline near Waveland with 305 km/h (190 mph) winds, the second-strongest maximum sustained wind speed at landfall of any Atlantic hurricane to strike the contiguous United States. Camille killed over 250 people and caused $1.4 billion in damage.
- 2013 - Tropical Depression Maring (pictured) affects the Philippines by enhancing the southwest monsoon killing 27 people with ₱690 million (US$15.4 million) before intensifying into a tropical storm.
August 18,
- 1983 - Hurricane Alicia made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane near Galveston, Texas. Alicia killed 21 people and caused $2 billion worth of damage.
- 2008 - Tropical Storm Fay (pictured) makes landfall over in Florida where it reached peak intensity overland. Moreover 21 people have perished over in America.
August 19,
- 1972 - Hurricane Celeste passes northeast of Johnston Island, surpassing records such as the highest wind gust and lowest pressure within the island.
- 1991 - Hurricane Bob (pictured) reached its peak intensity with 180 km/h (115 mph) winds off the east coast of the United States and caused $1.5 billion in damage to New England.
August 20,
- 1886 - The 1886 Indianola hurricane made landfall the Texas coast near Indianola with winds of 250 km/h (155 mph) that decimated the town. The storm killed over 74 people and the remnants of Indianola were later abandoned.
- 1994 - Typhoon Fred (pictured) makes landfall over in Zhejiang. Fred caused over 1,000 fatalities and damages exceeding to $1 billion.
August 21,
- 1994 - Hurricane John entered the Central Pacific Ocean. John became the longest-lived and farthest-traveled tropical cyclone ever recorded, lasting for 31 days between August 11 and September 10 and travelling over 8,000 mi (13,000 km) across the open Pacific.
- 2007 - Hurricane Dean (pictured) reaches peak intensity as a Category 5 hurricane as it makes landfall over north of Belize. In total, Dean had caused 45 fatalities and $1.66 billion in damages.
August 22,
- 1927 - The 1927 Nova Scotia hurricane reached its peak intensity with 195 km/h (120 mph) winds as it approached Nova Scotia, Canada where it killed 184 people and caused $1.1 million in damage.
- 1999 - Hurricane Bret reaches peak intensity while making landfall in southern Texas.
- 2012 - Typhoon Tembin (pictured) re-intensifies while brushing the southern coast of Taiwan.
August 23,
- 1964 - Hurricane Cleo reached its peak intensity with 250 km/h (155 mph) winds in the Caribbean Sea. Cleo made landfall in Haiti the next day, killing about 200 people.
- 1974 - Five systems (pictured) active within the Eastern Pacific. From left to right: Olive, Ione, Kirsten, Lorraine and Joyce.
- 1992 - Hurricane Lester attains peak intensity as a Category 1 just before making landfall over in Baja California, killing three people.
August 24,
- 1992 - Hurricane Andrew (pictured) made landfall near Homestead, Florida as a Category 5 hurricane. Andrew caused about $26 billion in total damages.
- 2015 - Typhoon Goni reaches its maximum intensity over in the Ryukyu Islands. In total, Goni killed 74 people and damages topped to $830 million.
August 25
- 1873 - The 1873 Nova Scotia hurricane moved away from the Nova Scotia coast towards Newfoundland, after killing about 500 people and causing $5.9 million of damage.
- 2017 - Hurricane Harvey (pictured) reached its peak strength as a Category 4 hurricane, shortly before making landfall over Texas, which killed 106 people in the US and caused around $125 billion (2017 USD) in damages, making Harvey the second-costliest tropical cyclone worldwide.
August 26
- 1931 - After a typhoon moved ashore China near Ningbo, heavy rainfall caused portions of the Grand Canal to collapse, leaving to a wall of water that killed 300,000 people during the country's worst floods on record.
- 2004 - Typhoon Aere made landfall near Xiamen as a weakening Category 1 typhoon. Overall, Aere killed a total of 107 people.
- 2011 - Typhoon Nanmadol (pictured) reached Category 5 super typhoon intensity as it made landfall over Gonzaga, Cagayan. In the Philippines, 38 people were killed by the storm, including $34.5 million in damages.
August 27,
- 1893 - The 1893 Sea Islands hurricane (track pictured) made landfall near Savannah, Georgia with winds of about 220 km/h (120 mph). The hurricane killed between 1,000 and 2,000 people on the Sea Islands off the Georgian and South Carolinan coastlines.
- 1989 - Hurricane Kiko (pictured) reaches peak intensity as a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 195 km/h (120 mph). In the same time, Kiko made landfall over in the southern tip of Baja California, though no fatalities and damages were reported.
August 28,
- 1985 - A trio of storms, from left to right, Pat, Odessa and Ruby, (pictured) begin interacting in a Fujiwhara effect. All three storms impacted and made landfall in Japan and collectively killed 29 people with total damages of at least $14 million.
- 1992 - Typhoon Omar made landfall in Guam, flooding much of the island. Omar caused about $450 million of damage there, but nevertheless only killed two people.
August 29
- 2005 - Hurricane Katrina (pictured) made landfall on the Gulf Coast near Buras-Triumph, Louisiana, flooding much of New Orleans and severely damaging the entire state of Mississippi. Katrina caused $125 billion of damage, making it the costliest tropical cyclone on record.
- 2021 - Hurricane Ida struck Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane and later moved across the northeastern United States. Ida killed 112 people and caused more than $75 billion in damage.
August 30,
- 1979 - Hurricane David reached its peak intensity with 280 km/h (175 mph) winds in the Caribbean Sea. The next day it made landfall on Hispaniola near Santo Domingo, killing over 2,000 people.
- 2015 - Three major hurricanes (pictured), from left to right, Kilo, Ignacio and Jimena, all reach maximum intensities as a Category 4 major hurricane across the Central and Eastern Pacific basins.
August 31,
- 1982 - Tropical Storm Akoni becomes a named tropical system, which is the first Central Pacific name to be given by the CPHC.
- 1990 - Typhoon Abe makes landfall in China, killing an estimated 108 people.
- 2002 - Typhoon Rusa made landfall in South Korea killing 113 people and causing $6 billion in damages.
- 2006 - Hurricane Ioke (pictured) passes over Wake Island after its peak strength, causing $88 million in damages.
