- 1900 - The 1900 Galveston hurricane (track pictured) struck Galveston, Texas, with winds in excess of 240 km/h (150 mph). The hurricane is the deadliest in the history of the United States and killed over 8,000 people.
- 1987 - Typhoon Gerald reaches peak intensity with 10-minute winds of 150 km/h (90 mph) and a minimum pressure of 950 hPa before making landfall in Taiwan which killed 127 people in total.
