News section seems absurd

The news section on the right seems an absurd collection of unencyclopedia-like content (WP:NOT a mere collection of external links). Yes, Israelis do have a thing for their news, and Jews around the world are very concerned about what's going on in Israel and its portrayal in world media. Still, that does not seem to justify something better found at a web directory and unparalleled in any other Wikiportals I've seen: indeed this section is meant for news updates themselves, not a listing of sources. When Humus sapiens first moved to this format with the question links to newssources are better than outdated news. Should we remove this panel altogether?, I would have answered yes. SHABAS

I'm posting this here since I don't think it will get much attention on WP:RA. Basically there is still no article on the prison service, SHABAS, and I think that's pretty bad. It's possibly the most important Israel-related article that still doesn't exist. The other one being Education Minister of Israel (there is a Finance Minister of Israel even though there's nothing about the ministry itself). I don't think many Wikipedians work for SHABAS, or there would've been something, but anyone who knows anything about the prison service, please create an article; it would be greatly appreciated. -- Y Ynhockey || Talk Y 07:56, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Lots of Problems with translatinos

First of all, the translation of "Did you Know" is wrong. It means "the know". Second, it is written in the feminine plaural. Unless every single wikipedia user is female (which is obviously not the case) it should be in the masculine. Israeli cuisine

"Israelis love falafel and baba ganoush."

This sentence is downright ridiculous. As well note Israeli music by saying "Israelis love to listen to Chava Alberstein." Israel is diverse in its tastes and sub-cultures, just like any other country (and perhaps more than most). An article on Israeli cuisine might not be amiss, but alongside well-known Middle Eastern foods like hummus & tchina, you can also mention Ashkenazi foods like gefilte fish, holiday foods like hamantasch, and even Russian or Ethipian food. And of course the legal limitations of kosherness and associated controversy.

I'd edit it right now, but I haven't seen an article like this, and I think consensus would be a good idea, in this case. LeaHazel : talk : contribs 15:25, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Jews:no to assimilation, yes to acculturation

Jews today, like their ancestors in Alexandria, can be influenced by the world around them, adopt the ideas of surrounding culture, yet remain loyal Jews and not completely assimilate. We can live in both worlds and make a success of that situation. According to the Rambam, THE definitive source of Jewish history, knowledge and one of the most cultured human beings ever, claimed that the Jews of Alexandria were completely assimilated (and further would not be the chief rabbi of Alexandria due to this fact). News

Bad news: so far we had 2 attempts to add news panel and both failed to keep up. Good news: There is no reason to duplicate/triplicate efforts at Portal:Current_events/Middle_East, Wikinews and here. Sources

In being a frequent editor to the politics section, I am troubled by the amount of links to Arutz Sheva and Israel National News pieces being used as references by a small but persistant group of editors, particularly noticeable in the Israel's unilateral disengagement plan article. My opinion is that they definitely aren't credible sources - they're right wing propaganda tools of the settlers (one article for instance claims 250,000 at a protest march, whilst Ynet puts it at 70,000).

Perhaps we should draw up a list of reliable sources on Israeli affairs. To begin with, I suggest:

• Jerusalem Post
• Ha'Aretz
• Ynet
• BBC and other international news organisations such as CNN etc.

However, there is also a problem with JPost and Haaretz articles that they disappear quite quickly - all the ones I checked from the disengagement article were broken. It's also shame that Ma'ariv don't have an English version. Number 57 22:05, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

Every source you guys mentioned is bias, banning sources is not going to get you anywhere. Arutz7 represents the right wing of Israel. Haaretz is as left wing as Arutz 7 is right wing. This year Danny Rubenstein, an editor and boardman at Haaretz called Israel an Apartheid State before the UN and concurred that that's a term common at Haaretz. That thinking is neither centrist within Israel nor globally. Featured Portal Status

Couple of ideas - in the news, on this day, and a featured quotes section. Perhaps a featured biography. I think we need to also formalise the featured article/picture so that its changed once every week or two and we have a proper vote thing? What do you think? There are two main columns. The left side is topped with 'selected article', the right side 'selected picture'. On my screen, there is apparently not enough room for both columns, so the page is broken into a left column with blank space on the right side, and then reversed at the bottom of the left column where the right column starts. In contrast, the Canada, Turkey, and France portals do not have this issue. Could you please size the columns closer to France or Canada. (Turkey has a mucher wider left side than right side.) Olmerts ministry has been plagued by a circus of scandals including.

• 1. Rape allegations against President Moshe Katzav
• 2. Rape allegations against former Justice minister Haim Ramon
• 3. General incompetance with the conduct of the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict
• 4. Embezzlement charges against Finance Minister Hirschon
• 5. Corruption charges against Olmert from his time in Jerusalem and sale of Bank Leumi when he was finance minister.

Frankly, I couldn't care less. There is still so much more work to do here on wp rather than whine about some losers in current events. Just a reminder, wp is an enclylopedia not an almanac of news. I concur. If this list were to be made into an article, it'd be awfully POV in any case. If you feel the need to discuss these scandals briefly in Olmert's own article, and/or to create separate articles for each, feel free, assuming you focus only on those which are really worthwhile to discuss. Note how many members of the Bush administration have scandals discussed within the biography article, and not (I hope - I haven't checked) in separate articles. Creating a list is not only meaningless towards the long-run significance of these events in history, but indicative of bias, which we try to avoid on Wikipedia. LordAmeth 17:06, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Nonfree image on the portal page

Hi. The image Image:Ben-yehuda.jpg that is on the portal page is a nonfree image. Per WP:NONFREE#9 and its exemptions, nonfree images can't be used on portal pages. I think Image:BYwork.jpg would be a good free image to put on the portal page instead, but I don't know anything about Israel and don't want to mess up the portal with an image that isn't appropriate. Interview and bot to auto-update

Wikinews has an interview that should perhaps be linked to from here.

There is a bot to automate copying over a list of latest news from Wikinews to Wikipedia portals, see Portal:Television for an example. I can't remember all the details but it might be worth looking in to. As a Wikinewsie I'd love to (a) see our coverage promoted here, and (b) See people who keep an eye on this portal try their hand on Wikinews to get a story in the bot-generated section.

User:RichardF who originally came up with the bot idea has implemented it on a number of portals, and I'd like to see this transclusion of data between WN and WP become well established. It should offer an opportunity to cover something that might not be considered encyclopedic, but it news. That's what Wikinews is for - we only go nuts when you have the Asian Tsunami, London Bombings, but as I expect it to get progressively harder to start new articles on Wikipedia, Wikinews offers new opportunities every day. --Brian McNeil /^talk 17:34, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Postage stamps and postal history of Israel

For the Israel stamp collectors and lovers, there is no article yet for Postage stamps and postal history of Israel (part of Category:Postal history by country) that would have so many Jewish themes. Feel free to go ahead and start it. (See the other country's in Category:Postage stamps by country that have theirs.) Nothing for Israel on Category:Postage stamps by country neither on List of country articles containing postal sections nor on List of philatelic bureaus. (but just a teeny note on Israel at Compendium of postage stamp issuers (Io - Iz).) This is truly a great shame and pity because Israel, and before that when it was the British Mandate produced and continues to issue the most beautiful and extensive stamps by any country. The importance of Yemenis for the existance of Israel

Hi. I've been reading many articles related to the state of Israel, Judaism and the Hebrew Language. I'm astonished for the enormous times that Yemeni jews are mentioned in them. I had never heard about yemeni-hebrew language, the purest form of hebrew that remains from the ancient (scriptural) language. I was not aware that a significant ammount of yemenis took part of the first and second Aliyah. etc.

I believe that the information regarding Yemenite Jews on Wikipedia is fair and accurate. However, I have not read many of the articles in question in a while, and probably do not know part of the information myself. Hemant Karkare and anti-Israel Conspiracy Theories

I would like to bring attention to the article on Hemant Karkare, which is currently sufferring from a massive edit war, possibly by sock puppets (see my post here for the list) led by an anti-Israel editor named User:TwoHorned (He tried to POV-push in the India-Israel relations article before). The focus of the "edit-war" is over WP:FRINGE Conspiracy Theories concerning his death and the 2008 Mumbai attacks (in which a Chabad Lubavich center in Mumbai was destroyed by Pakistani Muslims). The edit-warriors keep inserting many bogus claims made by extremists, one of them is that Israeli-government has been fomenting religious riots in India (see this section of their version). In this set of templates - should we keep the general and vague word "Terrorism" in the headline or should we change it to a word (or words) which would help define more precisely the difference between (1) any type of notable murder committed against Israeli targets and (2) any type of Arab/foreign militia terror attacks and/or individual nationalistic-motivated terror attacks (committed not only by Arabs) committed against Israeli targets. Nobel prizes per capita

Hello I would just like to say that the notion that Israel has the most Nobel Prizes per capita is wrong. Israel is in fact at the 11th position as you can see here.
