edit- See also Portal:Lithuania/Questions
All formal procedures of creating portal will be done later. Now we just need a place to talk. So here it is: 1. Use English so that everybody knows what's happening and nobody could claim non-exsisting things. Unless it's a secret :) 2. You can go ahead and create the portal yourself. 3. Please keep clean :)
Geographic naming
editHere's the naming policy, that I'd like to propose for naming of places in Lithuania (and in Poland, respectively):
The widely accepted English name or in absence thereof, the current Lithuanian official name is to be used. When mentioned in a historical context, the current Lithuanian official name can be additionally accompanied by the appropriate historical name in parentheses, where reasonable. This applies both to articles' contents and titles. A historical name can be used in title of an article about a place in Lithuania only in case of a redirect to the appropriate article titled with the official name.
Any comments ? Is this too strict ? --Wojsyl (talk) 09:48, 5 September 2005 (UTC)
- I don't like the latter part of the agreement, the one with historical names not used in article titles. It opens up a window to Battle of Stalingrad being moved to Battle of Volgograd. Halibutt 18:53, 30 September 2005 (UTC)
Lithuanian humor
editSee category:Comedy and humor by nationality. It does not have Lithuanian humor. Here are two hints from what I used to read long time ago: "Čia priėjo Kindziulis", Šluota, Peleda magazines. Aciu, viso gero! mikka (t) 00:37, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
- Ahm... Maybe. It's kinda difficult, because Lithuanians do not really have a well defined separate humor style. I need sources which I desperatly lack. But I'll see what I can do. Renata3 04:03, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
- Well, while the style may be not, but the forms there are, like I menitioned, Kindziulis. Also, there are Lithuiania-specific topics. Also, folk humor; humorous songs (I remember some from childhood,
- ...Ir vel ariau, ariau, ariau
- Lygiuosius laukelius.
- O mano mergele
- Suvalge pusrycius...
- Did you know this one? Just kidding...:-)).
- Student folklor:
- Does mathematical dept. of Vilnius University still remember
- ...savo patirtis:
- "Gyvenimo tikslas
- Tai yra mirtis"
- And of course, there is no sense to tak about jokes that may be told by any nationality. mikka (t) 06:12, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

- I was thinking to write about Dviracio žynios, a long-run polical humor show together with Valinskas & Co. Also, include student festivals like MiDi and FiDi. But that's ahead :) Renata3 04:06, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
Anyone wants to make a start? Renata3 04:28, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
- Maybe Wikipedia:WikiProject Baltic States would be easier to start with? Anyway, good luck!--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 23:46, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- Sure. Post either one on the list of Proposed wikiprojects page (You can check out my proposed WPs; WP Creed and WP Iceland). íslenska hurikein #12(samtal) 02:19, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
Proposed picture
editI would like to propose a picture Image:LithuaniaHistory.png as a featured in this portal. Knutux 10:01, 14 December 2005 (UTC)
- A very nice picture. Why don't you add it to some of articles? mikka (t) 01:27, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
Warning
editI'm rather new to Wikipedia, and completely new to this portal. Renata3 recently "warned" me on my talk page, that trying to remove Polish names from Lithuanian cities and towns is not only inadvisable, but that it "would be better for me to jump off a bridge", rather than try to. I like Renata and I feel that her advice is well intentioned. Sort of like, why bother, let it go? Recently, I was involved in a lengthy debate as to whether Panevėžys, should have its "Polish Historical" name in the header. My question, and it's not to make trouble, is why should cities like Panevėżys, or Tauragė, or Klaipėda, and many other cities and towns, in Lithuania, that have no connection to Poland Proper, have a Polish name included in the header? If you will bother to read my positions, on the talk pages, of Panevėżys, you'll get a better perspective of where I'm coming from. More later. Dr. Dan 03:26, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
Jagello
editNaming discussion has a new approval poll, to discuss the matter of how to name the article currently at Władysław II Jagiełło. Interested editors are invited to participate, at Talk:Władysław II Jagiełło. Shilkanni 20:05, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
Stubs categories needed
editI'm quite new in further editing wikipedia, rather than working on few articles, but recently i've found that two important stub categories are missing: Lithuania-hist-stub and Lithuania -culture(??)-stub. These are required to invite some more professional editors, and also denote, that tese topics ar not only "related" but also important. Polish and Belorussian editors already have hitsor stub categories. Without them, topics on history seem irellevant.--Lokyz 23:51, 27 June 2006 (UTC)
Sock Puppetry
editTo those who do not know what a Sock puppet is. Look up sock puppet (internet). Recently a sad discovery took place, when a heretofore respectable editor, user:Logologist, was discovered voting in Wikipedia votes or polls (in matters relating to Lithuania, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He created several sockpuppets user:Anatopism, user:KonradWallenrod (a particularly sad choice of a name), user:Mattergy, and used these sockpuppets to cheat in the voting. Please be on the lookout for this kind of activity. Needless to say, please don't try this sort of thing, It's very shameful, and not worth it, and usually discovered without a lot of trouble. The Logologist matter is is still being scrutinized and investigated. Dr. Dan 01:40, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
Reorganization
editI just thinking maybe this portal we should reorganize a little bit, for start withdraw parts such as quest book and ask questions? Some nice portals Portal:Ukraine, Portal:Germany. M.K. 20:43, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
Career after World War II: commanding operations against nationalist partisans in Lithuania and Latvia.
Any comments from the other side?Xx236 11:58, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
Maintenance
edit- Anybody looks after this page?? For example, the sad picture of Jonas Basanavičius takes place here more than half year when there are a lot of beautiful pictures in commons or Lithuanian wikipedia. Also, it would be very good to improve design of portal, renew information, etc. I could try to improve this page but first I want ask to other opinions and permission to do it. Hugo.arg 13:02, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
- Nope. It's a wiki, you don't need a permission :) Have fun :) Renata 17:40, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
I just added a new section "Lithuanian sites in Chicagoland" to the Lithuanians in Chicago article. If anybody cares to review it, go ahead.
Anyway, I think it would be nice to have an English Wikipedia article on the Lith. organization Ateitininkai (maybe Ateitis Foundation?). There is one in the Lith. Wikipedia: lt:Ateitininkai. Does anyone have any thoughts on having or creating such an article? H Padleckas (talk) 01:50, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
- I continue to expand the "Lithuanians in Chicago" article. If anybody cares to review it, go ahead. H Padleckas (talk) 23:24, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
Shame
editWhat a shame for the editors of this portal. You made it a area of politics and advertising of stupid "historic trues". Declarations, armies, "leaders", etc. Show the nature of Lithuania, ancient history, unique culture. But no, you are fighting with obscure occupants. Get a life, the war is over. Hugo.arg (talk) 15:54, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
Picture swap
editI would love to have feedback from community about pictures swaps, in Potral's "Featured picture" part. My criteria for picture inclusion would be:
- a) Interesting picture with LT relation, obviously.
- b) Highest P quality as possible.
- c) Picture linking to the article/s, should be properly developed with porer formats, refs etc.
Now, we have situation: I would like to see this historical picture as leading one, because:
- a)historical valuable image (considered by some WP individuals as "militaristic propaganda")
- b)decent quality
- c)notable figure,
- d) linked article properly developed, was showed on the main WP page.
VS
Another editor thinks that this one is better. However in my opinion, it lacks crustal parts mentioned above. If some other editor would provide feedback on this, i would be very pleased.
On general side, it would be good idea to develop general criteria for picture inclusions, to avoid inclusion of bad pictures into main portal page. M.K. (talk) 18:56, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
