Notice from the Portals WikiProject
editWikiProject Portals is back!
The project was rebooted and completely overhauled on April 17th, 2018. Its goals are to revitalize the entire portal system, make building and maintaining portals easier, support the ongoing improvement of portals and the editors dedicated to this, and design the portals of the future.
As of May 2nd, 2018, membership is at 60 editors, and growing. You are welcome to join us.
There are design initiatives for revitalizing the portals system as a whole, and for improving each component of portals. So far, 2 new dynamic components have been developed: Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.
Tools are provided for building and maintaining portals, including automated portals that update themselves in various ways.
And, if you are bored and would like something to occupy your mind, we have a wonderful task list.
From your friendly neighborhood Portals WikiProject. Hope to see you there. Sincerely, — The Transhumanist 07:41, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
Susanne Langer picture
editCommons says this photo "File:Langer.Susanne.foto 2.jpg" is being used on this portal. I cannot find it in the code of the portal. In fact it should be changed to this photo "File:Susanne Langer 1945.jpg" ~ R.T.G 11:40, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
GA-class articles
editThe following GA-class articles are presently being displayed in the portal using transclusion from articles. Consensus at VPP has approved using transclusion templates in portals, which provides users with up-to-date content that is verbatim to that in articles. Updates
editThe following GA-class articles were added to the portal's Good article section today: Stoicism, Divine command theory, Buddhaghosa, Gary Varner, From Bakunin to Lacan. North America1000 02:53, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Northamerica1000: Thank you! This is not related to your improvements, but the selected picture is firing blanks in some weeks. I thought about how to fix it but it's not my subject area and you do this sort of thing better than I could. There are more FPs above, but not the 53 we would need. One option is to create redirects e.g. FP/17 → FP/28; another is to cycle 12 images using CURRENTMONTH rather than the week. Ideally we'd have fewer subpages, so maybe it's time for a more radical change. What do you think? Certes (talk) 22:06, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Certes: It would be easy to update by placing images and captions from the subpages directly in the portal, using {{Random slideshow }}. See below for an example. That way, users won't see blank content, and can learn about other topics as well, rather than waiting for a month. North America1000 22:13, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Northamerica1000: Thanks for the hints. I've replaced the weekly picture with a slideshow. The FP subpages may now be redundant. Certes (talk) 23:25, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Certes: Thanks for the great work. I know this can be time-consuming. I have tagged the Featured picture subpages as historical for the time being (example diff). They could prove useful to users who work on the portal in the future, to see the portal's history. North America1000 23:44, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

- The statue of Theophrastus occurs twice, the second time with a caption "Painting of Leibniz", so something goes wrong there. Greeting, Eissink (talk) 10:11, 25 April 2020 (UTC).
- And if you are looking for more pictures, maybe this is an option: Frank Dicksee - The House Builders, showing Victoria, Lady Welby and husband in a rich painting. Eissink (talk) 10:16, 25 April 2020 (UTC).
- Thanks, Eissink. I've corrected the file link and added Lady Welby. Certes (talk) 10:33, 25 April 2020 (UTC)
Active
editIs this portal active? Editor2020 (talk) 22:30, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- It's being actively watched with preventative maintenance to replace obsolete templates, revert vandalism etc. The portal was overhauled in 2019 so that changes to articles it showcases will be reflected in the portal as they occur. Selected articles change weekly, selected pictures randomly, etc., but that's handled automatically rather than by making manual edits. Anyone is welcome to add relevant content but, as the field is fairly slow-moving, there doesn't seem to be a need for frequent additions. Certes (talk) 00:01, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
Hi! If anyone wants to help, I'd like some assistance with the article Critique of political economy
editHello lovers of wisdom.
I think people here probably could assist in making the epistemological and ontological presuppositions of certain authors writing in this field more explicit to help those who aren't familiar with the topic get a basic grasp of it.
Kind regards,
Wikifact
editHello. I would like to share a vision for a real-time fact-checking resource: Wikifact. I hope that the project is of some interest to those who contribute to Wikipedia in this philosophy portal.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikifact
In the not-too-distant future, it may become possible for end-users to fact-check arbitrary portions of documents in word processors and Web browsers simply by selecting content, using context menus, and making use of crowdsourced, collaborative resources such as Wikifact. End-users would be able to select content from social media websites, news articles, digital textbooks, or arbitrary other documents and websites, and then open context menus providing options for exploring, e.g., fact-checking, the content.
I am hoping that more people will express interest on the project proposal’s website. I am hoping to publicize the project proposal. I am hoping to disseminate these ideas.
Please express your support for or opposition to the proposal on the project’s wiki page. We also welcome any of your comments, questions, or feedback with respect to the proposal, in particular ideas for improving it. Please feel free to share any of your ideas in our talk pages.
Thank you, AdamSobieski (talk) 09:46, 11 July 2022 (UTC)
One page, not three
editHi fellow Wikipedians, does anyone know why there are three pages essentially fulfilling the same purpose? I am talking about Portal:Philosophy, Wikipedia:Contents/Philosophy and thinking and Draft:Contents of philosophy. Can't we simply opt for one and delete the others? Infogiraffic (talk) 15:05, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
- The draft is a relatively new page and, as an edit summary says, its purpose and scope are not yet clear. It may not be permanent. The other two pages are similar in style but contain different material. Contents aims to be a complete subject index of the topic, whereas the portal is more interactive, showcasing a randomly changing selection of Wikipedia's best relevant articles. There is some overlap and they could be merged. However, the resulting page would be large and might cause technical problems because many portals use complex templates and already pushing the 10-second limit for rendering. (Although they load slowly for editors, they appear much faster when logged out, by using a pre-rendered image.) Certes (talk) 15:52, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
