History
editThe Rabindra Maitree University was proposed for approval to the Ministry of Education, Government of Bangladesh as Legend Trust University in 2011. It was the brain child and under an active nourishment of Professor Dr. Mohammad Johurul Islam, the formerly Chairman of the Department of Law of Islamic University and formerly Dean of Faculty of Law of Islamic University, Kushtia-the then Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the proposed Legend Trust University.[3] The proposed university campus was duly inspected by two member committee of the University Grants Commission headed by the then UGC member Professor Dr. Atful Hye Shible. They gave a very positive report to the Ministry of Education for approval of the proposed Legend Trust University. But the proposal met an unexpected delay for its approval. In 2015 the Honourable Minister for Information Mr. Hasanul Huq Inu MP, who hails from Kushtia approached and brought the matter before Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.[4] It had been planned to have a campus of Rabindra University, Bangladesh at Shilaidha in Kushtia.[2] But on May 8, 2015, at a Rabindra Jayanti event at Kuthibari in Shilaidah, Hasanul Haq Inu said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had agreed to set up a separate private university named after Rabindranath Tagore in Kushtia.[5] Government approval for the establishment of the university was reported on 10 January 2016.[6] Hasanul Haque Inu, the then minister of information and broadcasting, was the chairman of the board of trustees, and his wife, Afroza Haque Rina was also on the board.[7]
As of June 2017, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had not given permission for the university to enroll students.[8] In April 2024, the UGC advised students against enrolling at the university because it lacked a vice chancellor.[9]
