The Raid on Trabzon in 1505 marks the first recorded direct military engagement between the forces of the Ottoman Empire and the rising Safavid Empire. The clash occurred during a period of official peace between Sultan Bayezid II and Shah Ismail I, triggered by escalating border frictions in eastern Anatolia.

Seeking to project Safavid influence and test Ottoman border alertness, Shah Ismail’s brother, Ibrahim, led a fast-moving vanguard of 3,000 Qizilbash heavy cavalry on a predatory raid into the Ottoman Eyalet of Trabzon. The central government in Istanbul had ordered local governors to avoid provoking the Safavids at all costs. However, the governor of Trabzon, Prince (Şehzade) Selim, refused to allow the violating forces to pillage his lands.

Despite possessing a critically small provincial garrison of roughly 450 active soldiers, Prince Selim utilized his superior knowledge of the mountainous Pontic terrain. He organized a highly effective ambush in a narrow valley just outside the provincial capital. Caught completely off guard in the restrictive choke point, the Safavid cavalry could not deploy into their standard sweeping battle formations. The Ottoman forces routing the raiders, inflicting massive casualties and capturing the Safavid supply train. The engagement significantly elevated Selim's reputation among the military class, fueling his eventual rise to the throne as a protector of the frontier.
