Rimini Haraya Makama, is a lawyer, entrepreneur and a corporate executive. She is the Executive Commissioner of Stakeholder Management at the Nigerian Communications Commission.[1]

Early life and education

Makama was born in Jos, Plateau State, in the north-central part of Nigeria.[2][3] She studied law at the University of Jos, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws and later earning a Master of Laws and World Order from the University of Reading.[4] She was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2004 and also holds a Professional Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing(CIM)UK.[1]

Career

Makama's career began in 2007 at Interpol, where she worked as the Principal Legal Assistant in the Office of Legal Affairs in Lyon, France.[5] While there she served as a lawyer, reviewing notices and individual requests promoting international security and safety across borders. She drafted cooperation agreements between the 190 member countries.[6] Makama then worked as the Communications Director, Africa Practice.[6] While there she successfully introduced some of the world's largest institutions like Blackberry, Paypal and Bloomberg to the Nigerian market and Africa, positioning them as key players in their industry and encouraging foreign investment into Nigeria.[6]

After this she joined Microsoft as the Government Affairs Manager for Nigeria and Ghana, rising to become the Government Affairs Director of the Middle East & Africa, Emerging Markets, Microsoft. In this position, she played an instrumental role in creating a policy environment conducive to public sector adoption of public cloud technology across numerous markets in the MEA region. Her role was central in defining a digital transformation framework for governments, placing Microsoft solutions at the forefront of public sector technology, stands out as a key achievement during her tenure.[7][4][8] Her contributions were recognized with the Be the Change Award.[1] She ended her time at Microsoft as Director, Xbox Global Expansion and Integration.[9]

In February 2024, she was appointed as the Executive Commissioner of Stakeholder Management at the Nigerian Communications Commission.[10] Her appointment was confirmed by the Nigerian Senate on the 21st of May 2024.[11]

Creative pursuits

Makama is a film enthusiast. She was the Executive Producer of Green White Green, a coming of age indie film which tells the story of three Nigerian teenagers as they make the transition from secondary school to university.[12] She was the Executive Producer The Lost Okoroshi, a Nigerian indie film which TheGATE.ca described as "a shining example of some of the most exciting cinema coming out of Africa today".[13][14]

In December 2014, Rimini Makama was named among "The 20 Youngest Power Women In Africa 2014", by Forbes.[3]
