RollOnFriday (also known as ROF) is a British website designed and used in the legal profession, for law students[1] to qualified solicitors and barristers including Kings's Counsel.[2] Its readership includes journalists and outside audiences.
History and content
[edit]The site was established in 2000[3][dead link] by Matthew Rhodes and Piers Warburton. The two met while solicitors at the London law firm Ashurst (where Warburton still works as a partner). Warburton said at the time that the site was intended to be 'young, irreverent and a bit cheeky'.[3][dead link]
From launch, the site provided weekly news stories,[4] detailed information on individual law firms[5] - including the salaries they pay - and weekly features such as 'glamorous solicitor'[6] showcasing some of the more interesting looking of the world's lawyers.
In 2001, the website launched the discussion board and more recently has developed a jobs database and other recruitment facilities.[7]
Moderation and moderation policy
[edit]Despite statements implied by the sites Terms of Use[8] the Discussion board frequently contains topics and comments of a racist[9][10][11][12], homophobic[13], transphobic[14][15][16][17], ableist[18], sexist and Islamophobic[19] nature. Some users discuss that whilst they have reported this content as being in breach of the platform's Terms of Use[20] it is rare that any steps are taken to remove it[21]. When reporting on culture war topics the authors/ moderators appear to have a noticeably hostile slant when covering the transgender community and its allies[22][23].
