Samuel (Sam) Sidiqi (born 1977) is an Afghan-American business executive and mountaineer. He has held senior executive positions in international real estate and mining companies and has undertaken mountaineering expeditions in North America, South America, and the Himalayas.[1][2]
Mountaineering
[edit]In June 2021, Sidiqi summited Denali, the highest peak in North America. According to Alaska's News Source, he was the first Afghanistan-born mountaineer to reach the summit.[3][4]
On 17 May 2023, he summited Mount Everest. The Delaware County Daily Times reported that he was the first Afghan national to reach the summit.[5]
In February 2026, he summited Aconcagua in Argentina. Ariana News reported that the expedition was intended to promote awareness of Afghanistan's mountain tourism potential.[6]
A 2026 profile in WorldView, published by the National Peace Corps Association, discussed Sidiqi's Afghan-American background, business career, mountaineering, and work through Afghan Peaks. The profile also covered his Everest and Denali climbs and his children's book, My Daddy Is Climbing Denali.[2]
Business career
[edit]Sidiqi joined the National Real Estate Company (NREC) as chief executive officer in 2012. In a 2016 interview with Knowledge at Wharton, he discussed his international business career, NREC's real estate strategy in the Middle East and North Africa, and his approach to managing political and currency risks.[1]
He later served as chief executive officer of RAK Properties. The National reported on his role in the company's development projects and quoted him discussing the Dh500 million Marbella Villas project in Ras Al Khaimah.[7]
He is also co-founder of Silk Road Mining. In 2018, International Mining reported that the Afghan government awarded the company a mineral development contract.[8]
Sidiqi is the founder of Afghan Peaks, a nonprofit initiative promoting mountaineering, mountain safety, and outdoor education in Afghanistan. Alaska's News Source and Ariana News have reported on the organization in connection with his mountaineering expeditions.[4][6]
Publications
[edit]Sidiqi is the author of My Daddy Is Climbing Denali, a children's picture book published in 2026. Kirkus Reviews described it as "a heartwarming adventure story" centered on perseverance, family, and the importance of making safe decisions in mountaineering.[9]
