Shirud (Persian: شيرود) is a city in the Central District of Tonekabon County, Mazandaran province, Iran.

History

After the 2006 National Census, the city of Shirud was established upon the merger of the following villages: Bala Shirud, Beramsar, Hemmatabad, Kaseh Gar Mahalleh, Khezr Konar, Kochanak, Lapa Sar, Lashtu, Mian Daj Mahalleh, Mohammadabad, Mojtame-ye Meskuni Farhangian, Pain Shirud, Ramj Mahalleh, Rashidiyeh, Shaghuz Kaleh, Sharifabad, Tamijanak, Vachak, and Zaruj Mahalleh.[3]

At the time of the 2006 census, the population (as the total of its constituent villages before their merger) was 10,454 in 3,001 households.[4] The 2011 census counted 10,429 people in 3,278 households,[5] by which time the villages had merged to form the new city of Shirud.[3] The 2016 census measured the population of the city as 11,377 people in 3,851 households.[2]
