Sintrivani metro station

Sintrivani metro station (Greek: Σιντριβάνι, literally Fountain)[3] is an under-construction metro station serving Thessaloniki Metro's Line 1 and Line 2. It is expected to enter service in 2023.[4] The station is named after an Ottoman fountain, which marked the eastern entrance into the walled city before its expansion, and the Thessaloniki International Fair, whose grounds are immediately adjacent.

The fountain after which the station is named. It was gifted in 1889 by Sultan Abdulhamit II to the people of Thessaloniki, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire. A Thessaloniki Metro construction information board is partly visible behind.

Once it opens in 2024, it will function as the terminus of both lines 1 and 2 until the section between New Railway Station and Agias Sofias opens in 2021.[5]

History

edit

The station appeared in the 1988 Thessaloniki Metro proposal[broken anchor].[6] In previous iterations of the Thessaloniki Metro Development Plan, the station was shown with the alternative spelling Syntrivani (Greek: Συντριβάνι).[7]

During construction, the station was known as Sintrivani/Ekthesi (Greek: Σιντριβάνι/Έκθεση, literally Fountain/Exposition), with the latter being in reference to the Thessaloniki International Fair.[8]
