He served the Government of Bihar in multiple key roles, including Deputy Development Commissioner, Director of Fisheries, managing director of both the State Cooperative Bank and the State Cooperative Marketing Union, and Resident Commissioner in New Delhi.[8] In the Central Ministry of Agriculture, he held the position of Fertilizer Commissioner.[9]

In his subsequent roles, he served as the FAO Representative in Nepal from 1988 to 1993 and in Yemen from 1993 to 2000, where he significantly increased FAO's technical assistance programs. During this period, he also acted as Resident Coordinator for all UN development agencies in both countries. His tenure included a critical year in Ethiopia, where he helped mobilize emergency project funds during a drought crisis. He reached the senior-most D-2 professional grade in the UN, demonstrating his extensive expertise in rural development and agriculture.[10][11]

After his time with the FAO, Mahdi served as Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia from March 2000 to June 2004. His recent activities include chairing the Delhi Education Society and Dr. Zakir Husain Memorial Welfare Society, along with serving on various educational councils, such as NIEPA, Ed.CIL, and the Maulana Azad Education Foundation.
