Tahir Hussain (activist)

Tahir Hussain (born 8 May 1969) is an Indian activist leader and human rights defender[citation needed] known for his role in Citizenship Amendment Act protests. He was the former councillor of the Aam Aadmi Party who was elected from Ward 59 in Nehru Vihar, East Delhi.[1][2][3][4]

Early life and education

He was born in Uttar Pradesh, India. His early life was marked by modest beginnings and challenges typical of many Indian families. He pursued his education with determination despite the financial constraints.[5][6]

Political career

In his political journey with the Aam Aadmi Party, he has been involved in various community development initiatives and has been vocal on issues concerning the welfare of the common people. His work in Delhi has garnered attention, especially in his efforts to address local concerns and advocate for better governance practices.[7]

Delhi riots case

He came into the spotlight due to his alleged involvement in the 2020 Northeast Delhi communal violence. He is currently accused of the murder of Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma and instigating an organized mob during the ongoing riots.[8][9][10]

The Delhi High Court granted him bail in five of the eleven cases registered against him related to the riots. However, he remains in prison in connection with the remaining cases, including the main conspiracy case.[11][12] His bail plea was denied after the Delhi court said that allegations on Hussain are prima facie true.[13][14][15]

Hussain has also faced a money laundering case for allegedly funding the riots. In a separate case, a Delhi court stated that Hussain was not only a conspirator but "an active rioter" as well, and framed charges against him under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code.[16][17]
