It should be easy to confirm that Šah is pronounced either like "Shah" or like "Shokh" (and by the way, Schach is German for "chess" (and one must suspect "check"). Also that checkmate comes from "shah maht", meaning "the king is dead", so that almost certainly the Dab is on the right track and the problem of non-mentioning lies with the two respective articles.
