Restored article, since lots of infos were dropped in the merge, and i think the topic justifies its own article. -- Chris 73 | Talk 09:51, 9 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Proposed merge of Variety store with 100-yen shop

edit

100-yen shops in Japan appear to serve the same function of dollar stores in the United States; because it covers the same topic, just a different country, and given that the article is very short, it would be better to do a merge. Aasim (talk) 20:40, 21 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Appeal to keep the "variety store" and "100-yen store" entries separate

edit

When one looks up the term "100 yen store", they are probably seeking information that extends beyond the concept of "variety store" as western countries define the term. While technically a variety store by definition, 100-yen stores hold a different cultural and functional role than the western dollar/variety store does. Their goods tend to be higher quality with a more diverse selection while having a greater emphasis on quality-of-life improvements (rather than a focus of selling necessities at a cheaper price).

The history of 100-yen stores also differs quite a bit from western variety stores, as it has cultural roots specific to Japan. A reader would benefit from having a separate page dedicated to 100-yen shops to be able to explore this history and the cultural difference. Additionally, many people looking up 100-yen shops would likely be in Japan or planning a trip to Japan, and would benefit from the subsections discussing specific 100-yen chains and cities in which these chains can be located, as well as a discussion on what types of goods can be found there.

It would make most sense to keep the two pages separate, as "variety store" does not adequately describe the role, function, goods, and history of 100-yen stores. 2601:240:4880:3DF0:8CB4:108E:465F:3296 (talk) 08:53, 31 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Closing, with no merge, given the uncontested objection and no support
