Date of Motto "The Chief's Own"

edit

The narrative indicates that the motto, "The Chief's Own" was given to the unit on 11 Sep 2001. However the Air Force Historical Research Agency, which is the USAF agency responsible for heraldry (including mottoes) dates the motto to 1995 (see source cited in infobox). It is also unclear what is intended in the introduction where it is claimed the motto was given because the unit was established personally by (an unidentified) Chief of Staff of the USAF. It would not apply to a group established in 1933, and seems unlikely for a wing established in 1951 in Texas.--Lineagegeek (talk) 21:35, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

The backstory of the motto re-designation has been addressed. Originally, the motto was intended to describe the function of the 11th Wing as the primary administrative support organization for Headquarters Air Force. With those duties assigned to the resurrected AFDW in January 2005, the use of the motto fell into serious question. As the AFDW commander from 2006 to 2007, Maj Gen Robert L Smolen chose to have the motto remain with 11th Wing in honor of their service on September 11, 2001 and not as a mark of function. The Chief's Own designation was considered doubly appropriate as 11th Wing also has operational control of both the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard and U.S. Air Force Band -- two of the most visible "ambassador-level" outreach programs under USAF oversight to date. To have the ambassador-level programs remain closely associated with the Chief of Staff of the Air Force was considered appropriate by Gen. T. Michael Moseley, the then-Chief of Staff of the Air Force and provided added justification for the motto to remain with 11th Wing and not be given to AFDW. As AFDW is now a major command, the designation would be inappropriate for that tier of organization as all major commands can be argued to be at the same level without preference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 132.3.29.80 (talk) 12:27, 16 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
