Asphalt pictures
editPinging @Royalbroil: to see if there are any asphalt-track pictures in your (or anybody else's) archives. Willsome429 (say hey or see my edits!) 14:17, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
- I have many - Mission accepted! Royalbroil 14:46, 18 October 2020 (UTC)
Improvement ideas
edit- The track is located on County R which used to be the route for U.S. Route 141. I have old Wisconsin state highway maps showing this road as US 141. Obviously the track was named after it.
- I have videos of Mid American cars racing on the track (probably both the touring cars and the local class which was separate). Not great quality but okay (somewhat grainy). Should I upload?
- In 2009, the last year with an asphalt track, they raced IMCA-sanctioned sport mods. I have one picture of the ticket building with the IMCA sanctioning banner. I have pictures of cars - should I upload car pics? The final classes in 2009 were Mid Americans, Super Stocks, Sport Modifieds, Mini Stock (enhanced 4 cylinder cars with wider tires), Hobby Stock, and Sport-4 (unmodified 4 cylinders cars) [1].
- A few years ago I went inside the bottom of the tower. They have a room that displays the history of the track with old newspaper clippings, photographs, memorabilia, etc. I bet there are much content in the room that could be used to expand the article. I think the track started out with another configuration, maybe a dirt half mile?? Royalbroil 04:28, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
- Whatever you think would benefit the page, go ahead and upload. I'd lean yes on both because currently there's not a picture of the ticket booth and it doesn't look like there are any Mid-Am videos on Commons, so it could be used on that page as well. There are some old maps on the Internet Archive as well, I can see if there are any that match up the Speedway and the highway when it was still 141. I found a user-generated claim that it started out as a dirt half in 1949 but couldn't find a source for it. I have no clue how to get to the bottom of the scoring tower, but I plan on making at least one trip next year so I can look into it then. That does seem like a gold mine for resources. - I have 5 official state highway maps with the former route of 141 on it, including 1970, 1973, 1975, 1976, and 1978-78. The last two have the future route of I43 in dashes. I could email pictures if you want. I was attending grade school when I43 was built and before 141 Speedway was shortened so I barely remember it. I looked through all of my 141 photographs from 2010 to present and I don't have any from inside the bottom tower. I must have went inside but didn't take pictures. To get inside, there's a door on the side of the tower which is away from the oval (closest to the entrance). The door was open when I went inside. I should mention that the Mid Am class at 141 had separate points from the tour but the local cars could race in tour events at the track. Royalbroil 02:32, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
- Don't make an extra effort to get stuff over to me - it's all good. I'll take your directions to the archives with me when I go to the track in '21! Willsome429 (say hey or see my edits!) 12:13, 23 October 2020 (UTC)
