State champions?
editThe source states "state champions in 1902, 1903, and 1905", which is dubious when it seems there was no 1905 season for FSC, and Stetson was champion. One can see from this navbox, I believe gleaned from team pictures and media guides, that 1904 is the only FSC state championship for which there is account. However, the claims look arguably as good as EFS in 1902 and as Stetson in 1903. Is there maybe an additional source? Cake (talk) 16:24, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
ESPN states "Florida State won its first football championships in 1904 and 1905 while wearing purple and gold uniforms." http://www.espn.com/college-football/team/stadium/_/id/52 Florida State says "the College football team, which had been state champions in 1902, 1903, and 1905." https://www.fsu.edu/about/history.html On the universities athletics site it states "Florida State’s school colors of garnet and gold date back to the Florida State College championship football teams of 1904 and 1905. In those championship seasons, FSC donned purple and gold uniforms. When Florida State College became Florida State Female College in 1905, the football team was forced to attend the University of Florida." http://seminoles.com/trads_fsu-trads-colors/ The Tallahassee Seminole Club, which is a chapter of boosters located in the same university as the city state "In 1904 and 1905 the Florida State College won football championships wearing purple and gold uniforms. When FSC became Florida State College for Women in 1905, the football team was forced to attend an all-male school in Gainesville." http://www.tallahasseeseminoleclub.com/fsu-traditions/ Given that Florida State did not have a football team in 1905, it seems that the 1905 Championship was for the 1904 Season. And the 1904 Championship for the 1903 Season. It seems that the majority of sources agree on these two championships, with less support for the 1903 Championship covering the 1902 Season. The 1902 Championship would cover the 1901 Season. From what I can find Florida State "first fielded a football team in 1900." However, I do not believe this championship should be included, as Before the Seminoles: Football at Florida State College, 1902-1904 states, "Football was not new to Tallahassee. The game had been played there since at least 1890." "Before 1902 the men played intramural football"Norris.michaelj (talk) 18:45, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- Even with the reading that the year of the championship refers to the season before, which is tenuous, there is only the source I referenced which cites a state championship for the 1902 season. I wonder if whoever puts together the FSU media guide would know. Cake (talk) 19:42, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- PS "At least 1890" would be before Stetson in 1894, and incredibly old for Florida. 1890 is the usual date to start talking about Southern football in general, e. g. in Tennessee. Cake (talk) 18:22, 10 January 2018 (UTC)
