1927 highest break?

edit
  Resolved
 – Highest break of the tournament 60 by Albert Cope, highest break of the final 57 by Joe Davis. Armbrust, B.Ed. WrestleMania XXVIII The Undertaker 20–0 10:55, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

It mentions that the highest break was 60 by Albert Cope, but reference 1 (global snooker) states that is was Joe Davis with 57. Is either correct?

I think its quite important to clarify, as it is referenced in other pages, most notably in the history of snooker.

Pictogram. OK or not?

edit

Hi, so that there is no logo for those old tournaments, how about this pictogram instead? There is another version:  . Tell me your opinions. ---LezFraniak (talk) 10:13, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I don't think this is a good idea, as it essentially functions as a place-holder image. Also if there would a need for such an image, than it could be easily coded into the infobox (to show up if no other image is given). Armbrust, B.Ed. Well, looks better than nothing. You should have give other users a chance to have a look at it before reverting so fast. This is a talk page, I expected at least three opinions before making a decision. ---LezFraniak (talk) 11:07, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I'm self-reverted for now. But if there will be no other opinion at the end of the month, than I will remove it again. Armbrust, B.Ed. WrestleMania XXVIII The Undertaker 20–0 11:13, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good to me. (I wish I'd wrote "See talk page" at the edit, so that people know.). ---LezFraniak (talk) 11:21, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
PS: I took wrong image above. This one was been meant:  . -LezFraniak (talk) 11:31, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
No you took the right image, I just changed it on the article. Armbrust, B.Ed. WrestleMania XXVIII The Undertaker 20–0 11:45, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Wow, what a great idea. Great contribution LesFraniak. That's a keeper in my mind. Spc 21 (talk) 12:03, 4 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
The month is not been over yet. and the poll says 2 pro, 1 contra. Lets give'm a longer try --LezFraniak (talk) 19:37, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Picture back. Armbrust, B.Ed. WrestleMania XXVIII The Undertaker 20–0 20:06, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Fine, but do not refer readers to the ongoing talk page discussion. That's for editors to worry about, not our dear audience. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:11, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
This wasn't added by me. Armbrust, B.Ed. WrestleMania XXVIII The Undertaker 20–0 20:13, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Whatever, it was a general comment, I don't really care who added it, just let's not have it there. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:16, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Okay. BTW what is your opinion on the placeholder image? Armbrust, B.Ed. WrestleMania XXVIII The Undertaker 20–0 20:20, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Well I rather like it, but I'm not sure if it's good per WP:IMAGES if it's just purely decorative. But it's free (I assume) so it shouldn't be too much harm. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:25, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
So if this is not the right place to talk about it, where would it be?--LezFraniak (talk) 21:02, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Lead

edit
  • "but it is now recognised at the inaugural edition" - typo; should be as
  • "Ten players entered the competition, including most of the leading billiards players." - Try not to begin a sentence with a number
  • "The highest break of the tournament was 60, compiled by Albert Cope in his match against Davis." - in what frame was the highest break made?
  • "It remained the best in the Championship until Davis made a 61 in the 1929 final." - It remained the highest break
  • Wikilink 1929 final to the relevant article

Background

edit
  • "in 1924 from professional Tom Dennis had been rebuffed by the BACC's Secretary A. Stanley Thorn," - how about rejected instead?
  • "Davis drafted the conditions under which a Championship could take place," - the word in bold doesn't need to begin with a capital letter
  • "The Stanley Thorn, wrote that the decision to promote a professional championship" - don't think that Thorn's actual correct full name
  • "Gate receipts for each match, after expenses, were to equally shared out between the players concerned." - were to be equally
  • "Snooker historian Clive Everton wrote that when the professional snooker championship was introduced, "billiards was still very much the premier game, with snooker a sideshow which few were convinced would ever come to much as a public entertainment," and that the early championships received "minimal publicity." - repetition of "championship(s)"
  • "Ten players entered the championship." - try not to begin a sentence with a number
  • "had declined to participate in the championship[8]" - a full stop is missing before the reference and after the word "championship"

Schedule

edit
  • The Reference column can be deleted and the references put into a table header called "|+1927 World Snooker Championship schedule" or something similiar

Summary

edit
  • "The snooker was played as an added extra to the main event, a billiards match." - snooker game
  • Wikilink table to billiards table for those unfamiliar with snooker and pockets to the relevant article only on the first mention
  • "The match started on Monday 29 November 1926 with two sessions per day until Saturday 11 December." - don't think the names of dates are needed
  • The terms frame and session should be wikilinked to the relevant article only on the first mention
  • "In the evening session Dennis won the first two frames to win 8–6." - repetition of "won"
  • "He two more frames in the afternoon to lead 14–5" - He took two
  • "Cope's 60 break was the highest made in the tournament," - Cope's break of 60
  • " and in recognition of this Cope later received a commemorative certificate from the BACC." - would receive
  • 1929 final can be linked to 1929 World Snooker Championship
  • "Like the Inman v Newman match it was played as an added extra to a billiards match." - As with the game between Inman and Newman
  • "but Dennis won the first two in the evening to win the match 12–10." - repetition of "won" and "match"

Final

edit
  • "Davis had taken a winning lead by taking frame 23 80–34"- little awkward; can be taking the 23rd frame 80–34
  • "Davis won four of the seven frames on the final day to win 20–11." - repetition of "won"
  • "Davis went on to win the World Championship each year until 1940," - every year

Main draw

edit
  • "Match results are shown below. Winning players and scores are denoted in bold text.[18][20][22][25][28][33][36][44][51]" - an example of WP:OVERCITE. Think the last citation can be used on the text and the rest of the references be put in the correct places on the draw bracket
  • As match info and dates are already sourced earlier in the article, I thought it would be better to cut refs down here. The Snooker Scene source has all the results, but not countries, so I looked elsewhere for that and came up against a hiccup I've tried to deal with via efn.
