Contemporary naming

edit

It has long been a concern of mine that the naming framework we use for schools in the MIAA is incorrect for early years. I've begun to search for some actual date to see what was the WP:COMMONNAME for the member schools in 1938. Here are my findings from searches of Newspapers.com, covering the time period 9/38-12/38 and limited to Missouri newspapers:

Maryville

  • "maryville bearcats" gets 79 hits
  • "maryville teachers bearcats" gets 5 hits
  • "northwest missouri state bearcats" gets 0 hits
  • "northwest missouri teachers bearcats" gets 0 hits
  • "maryville state bearcats" gets 0 hits

Conclusion: Maryville Bearcats was pretty clearly the common name during the 1938 football season. Accordingly, I am moving the article to reflect the contemporary common name. @Jweiss11: Let me know if you have thoughts. I am going to begin with 1938 and then try to fix things one year at a time, as time permits. Cbl62 (talk) 23:42, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
