Talk:1957 Carmarthen by-election

Removal of statement that was clearly untrue

edit

The claim (unsourced) made prominently at the start of the article that this was "the first election in the United Kingdom in which two women competed for the same seat" was completely wrong. There had been several instances at UK general elections and by-elections where two women candidates contested a seat long before this. For instance at the 1929 United Kingdom general election Marion Phillips and Elizabeth Morgan both contested Sunderland. At the 1931 Islington East by-election Leah Manning was elected ahead of Thelma Cazalet. At the general election a few months later they were the only two candidates in the same Islington East seat, while Wallsend also had only women candidates (Irene Ward and Margaret Bondfield). Thus this statement is clearly untrue and misleading, hence I have removed it. Dunarc (talk) 15:57, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

I think however, this may be the first Welsh seat where two of the candidates were female, but there would need to be a source to confirm this for it to be included.
