Talk:1972 Labour Party Shadow Cabinet election

John Morris

John Morris was down as John Morris, Baron Morris of Aberavon. While this is his title today and the name of his page it was not at the time and could have wrongly given the impression that he was a peer rather than an MP. I have therefore changed it to John Morris as this is what he was known as in 1972, and is generally the convention for articles like this. Dunarc (talk) 20:54, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

Reg Prentice colour et al

I am not sure Prentice should be down in green (ie for "Joined the Shadow Cabinet") as he was already a member. Although he had just missed being elected in the 1971 Labour Party Shadow Cabinet election, he had become a member of the Shadow Cabinet in April 1972 along with John Silkin when George Thomson and Harold Lever resigned over the party's police on Europe. Also related to this there are no blue for voted out of the Shadow Cabinet. However there is an argument that John Silkin and Barbara Castle should be. As noted above Silkin was a member of the Shadow Cabinet going in to the election, having joined in April 1972. The issue in his case is though further complicated as he was not strictly speaking voted out in the 1972 ballot, rather he tied for the final place with Peter Shore, but then opted not to contest the run-off election with him. Barbara Castle lost her place in the shadow cabinet in the 1971 election, but had been re-elected to it in a special election in May 1972 when a vacancy arose. She certainly tried to get re-elected in the 1972 contest, so she probably should be in blue for voted out, perhaps with a note to describe the circumstances.
