Six storms
editTo me, this is event is pretty remarkable and I've investigated it extensively. There were two different stints of five simultaneous tropical storms active. The first was from late on August 23 to early on August 24 with Hurricane Ione, Tropical Storm Olive, Hurricane Joyce, Hurricane Kirsten and Tropical Storm Lorraine. The second stint was from 00Z on August 26 until 06Z August 27, a full 30 hours! Tropical Depression Olive dissipated 06Z August 26, so that means that for a brief time, there were six tropical cyclones active in the Pacific Ocean east of the International Date Line. To put this in perspective, the record for the Atlantic is four. And as remarkable as the Western Pacific is, I could find no precident there either. WPAC has had four simultaneous storms (Aug. 30/31 1985), three simultaneous major hurricanes (Sep. 9 1987, that's probably a record) and two simultaneous Category 5's (Oct. 17/18 1997, I know that's a record. It is shared by SPAC; 1/6/98) but even with all that water and all that insane activity with 25-30 storms every season, there were never five active at once at least in the past 50-plus years. Records for the Southern Hemisphere are incomplete and I could find no more than three at once. However, during this event, there were never more than three hurricanes active at once. That record appears to belong to the Atlantic with four, which it has done twice (1893 and 1998) although it's possible the Western Pacific has matched it at one point or another. -- HurricaneERIC - Class of '08: XVII Maius MMVIII 20:58, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Hurricane Orlene
edit@Cyclonebiskit: Why here this storm must retain it's Atlantic name, when in all other basin crossers they only show their respective basin name? I know that this case is controversial, but I don't see it as a reason for that, especially when there's a link to the main article citing it's full name.
