April 1: The VIA Rail officially began independent operations as Canada's national passenger rail carrier. April 2:In Brownson, Nebraska, 30 of the 85 cars on a Union Pacific Railroad train derailed. A tank car full of liquid phosphorus then exploded, injuring three people. Over 500 people were evacuated. April 15: The Murazze di Vado Train disaster, when due to a small landslide in the Murraze di Vado area in Vado a express train derails next to a ravine, then a second train slams into it.
