• Sheffield United had finished the 1987–88 season in 21st place in the Second Division, having won their final game against bottom club... - Why is this mentioned on a section that is related to the play-off.

  Because he pllayed in the first leg and didn't make it back from injury in the second leg and I have no sources to mention the injury in the first leg, perhaps he just finished the game and it was after the event.
