Something about the Lyrics
editI noticed a repeated line that said, "I was dreamin' when I wrote this." Does that mean the song is partly based on a particular melody, harmony, or words sung that Prince or anyone with a connection with him dreamed about and made any of those a reality? 2602:306:BDCA:ACE0:19DA:FC75:4D66:5B9E (talk) 02:07, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
Performances Section Lacks Citations
editI've attempted to google these results, but there are no citations for any of these claims. For example, there was no news coverage that I could find of Los Angeles radio stations playing Prince's 1999 during New Year's Eve 1999. Yoshiman6464 (talk) 02:19, 22 April 2016 (UTC)
Prince created "1999" around the central riff of the 1966 song, "Monday, Monday" by The Mamas & the Papas.

I've listened to both songs many times and I can't detect any similarities in the riffs of MM and 1999. Can someone enlighten me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.207.175.138 (talk) 00:03, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
I think the discussion is around the similarity between the intro of "1999" and the opening vocal harmony of "Monday Monday." - i.e. when the Mamas and the Papas sing "Bah da bah da da da". Some reviewers share this view, e.g. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/1999-prince I suggest to put it under the reception section. The fact is that there is obviously no direct trace that Price admitted it (at least I could not find any) Giovanni-PSV (talk) 11:15, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

Anti war song
editThere is no mention of this being an anti war song in the article yet there is a wikilink for list of anti war songs. Is there any evidence that this is an anti war song? If there is it should be put in the article. If not list of anti war songs should be deleted from the see also section. Mobile mundo (talk) 13:05, 16 May 2018 (UTC)

The request to rename this article to 1999 (Prince song) has been carried out. |
1999 (song) → 1999 (Prince song) – To differentiate from 1999 (Charli XCX and Troye Sivan song) per WP:PDAB. Kailash29792 (talk) 14:46, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
- Support Fails WP:PRECISION, PRIMARYSONG was rejected at RCF, like other PDABs have had little consensus and are confusing. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:32, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
- Support per nom, and Crouch. -- Netoholic @ 18:17, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
- Automatic support as per comment above, but could have been a technical request. In ictu oculi (talk) 21:48, 1 February 2019 (UTC)
- 1999 (Prince song) is just a redirect pointing to the target with no history so it could just have been moved. Also 1999 (Charli XCX and Troye Sivan song) gets more views [[1]]. Crouch, Swale (talk) 13:46, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
- Those page views are WP:RECENTISM - I suggest always switching the graph to "Monthly" and expanding the date range to full as shown here for a more complete view. -- Netoholic @ 17:08, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
