Drug uses

2,6-Xylidine is used in the production of a slew of pharmaceutical drugs. For Example:

  1. Droxicainide
  2. Etidocaine
  3. Lidamidine
  4. Lidocaine (Lignocaine)
  5. Lidofenin
  6. Lidoflazine
  7. Nefiracetam
  8. Pincainide
  9. Ranolazine
  10. Tocainide
  11. Mepivacaine
  12. Bupivacaine
  13. Ropivacaine

A lot of these can be grouped as local anesthetics. The rationale behind using the ortho-dimethylated aniline design is to shield the molecule from enzymes that metabolize the drug by amide degradation.
