Breaking Ties in the Table

edit

England and Ireland tied for first place in the table with 4-0-1 records and 8 table points each. England lost in the head-to-head match with Ireland 20-14, which would, in the tie-breaking rules of most other sporting events, give Ireland first place over England. However, in this case, England was awarded first place. It would be interesting to add to this article with an explanation of how ties are broken in the table. Is it Points Difference, for example? I doubt the tie-breaking criteria have changed much in the last 30-40 years, so it would indeed be points difference in this case. That said, we have no published source for how ties were broken in the Six Nations in 2001. All we have is the final table from that time, which shows England as champions. – PeeJay 11:43, 4 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
