The passage of this referendum would likely have removed Tokelau from the United Nations list of Non-Self-Governing Territories. It is unclear if the democratic rejection of self-governance will have a similar effect.

I'm not absolutely certain, so haven't edited, but I don't think it would. After all, Bermuda rejected independence in a referendum, and Gibraltar also voted overwhelmingly to stay British, and both those territories are still on the list. Islanders chose not to change Tokelau's status from an unincorporated territory of New Zealand to the proposed alternative is unfortunate wording, as most voters did support the change. Zocky | picture popups 02:47, 17 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
