Possible renaming

edit

I started this article as Rwanda earthquake because the first news were from there. But now we see that the earthquake left several dead and injured in Congo as well. Is it suitable to modify the name of the article? I'd appreciate opinions. --Tone 18:03, 3 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

For now, I have created redirects from 2008 Democratic Republic of the Congo earthquake and 2008 Congo earthquake. --Tone 22:55, 3 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Maybe 2008 Great Lakes earthquake since it was felt in at least 3 countries of the region. --moyogo (talk) 09:50, 4 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I believe the name of the article should be moved to 2008 Lac Kivu earthquake(s), (possibly plural), because of

  1. thats the name the USGS is using in its summaries;
  2. it does not make much sense to name the quake Rwanda quake while the epicenter of the main shock was in DR Congo, neither it makes sense to call it 2008 DR Congo quake when—as it appears by now—the impact in Rwanda seems to be much worse than in DR Congo.

Therefore, keeping the actual name does not seem appropriate to me. Including the month isn't necessary unless another notable quake will happen in that region later this year. --Matthiasb-DE (talk) 13:22, 4 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's Lake Kivu now. Please no plural because usually aftershocks are not counted when using the name. --TheFEARgod (Ч) 13:31, 4 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Any mention of Limnic eruption danger in sources?

edit

I don't have time right this moment, but Lake Kivu has been mentioned in the past as having the same type of deep deposits of gas like Lake Nyos. Earthquakes seem like they could cause an overturn, this one obviously didn't but could have. Anynobody 23:59, 4 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

See USGS summary of this earthquake. --213.155.231.26 (talk) 14:38, 7 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
