Candlewicke proposes a move to 2009 Jeux de la Francophonie, as that is the title for every other game. (This original idea came from WP:ITN/C#Francophone Games)  Cargoking  talk  10:00, 28 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Well I'd have to support my own point there. A move would seem to make sense (right now anyway). --candlewicke 10:29, 28 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Article

edit

This article used odd capitalization... like it was written in French originally, was this translated from somewhere else? Particularly, the weird quotation marks all over the article makes it seem like it came from somewhere. 76.66.197.30 (talk) 04:11, 29 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Can't do without the "weird" quotation marks, how else would you write french organisations' names on english wikipedia ?? Eli+ 12:51, 29 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Foreign terms should be italicised not in "quotes" (see Manual of style). Also, see the OIF talk page for how I think the term "Francophonie" should be treated in this, and other, articles. Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits)Join WikiProject Athletics! 13:59, 29 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I didn't mean weird quotes, as in using quotes for French terms, I meant weird quotes as in typographic marks that are not ASCII, but in the extended Unicode set of characters that are also used as quotation mark characters. See ‘ ’ “ ” ... some of which are even used as apostrophes. 76.66.197.30 (talk) 14:44, 29 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
i see hehe, i tend to write long passages in MS Word to avoid loss due to edit conflicts and connectivity freezes. Not to mention my phone browser . Abt MOS feel free to change anything that doesnt comply Eli+ 14:53, 29 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I've given the whole article a once over in terms of copyediting. I've moved the article organisation towards that of the 2008 Summer Olympics article, because I feel that gives a good overview of a Games event. I've got a few more additions in mind, which I'll do shortly. One thing I will say Eli is that you should be more careful about rephrasing from the source material. On a few occasions, the source has been repeated, practically verbatim. Given that English is not your native tongue, it is understandable. I'll try to help out with this issue wherever possible. What does the "Francophonie" stand for?

edit

After some more research into the situation (and the IP editor's link above[2]), it is unclear what exactly the "Francophonie" of Jeux de la Francophonie means. It could either mean "La Francophonie" (as in the OIF) or it could mean "la francophonie" (as in "the french-speaking" world, which is broadly referred to in English as Francophones). See an example of the second usage at about.com.

This lack of clarity here has meant that the English press has translated Jeux de la Francophonie in two separate forms: Francophone Games,[3] and Games of La Francophonie [4] (the second clearly referring to the OIF).

Thus, I think the article should contain the following phrase (Francophone Games or Games of La Francophonie in English). Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits)Join WikiProject Athletics! 16:37, 29 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

From Talk:Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OlF), some editors decided that the form to use in English is the Canadian English form, via WP:ENGVAR, since Canada is an English-speaking nation that is a member of the Francophonie, on the basis that European articles use British English because the UK is in Europe, so Canadian English should be used for Francophonie topics because Canada is in the Francophonie. 76.66.197.30 (talk) 07:40, 30 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject Francophonie?

edit

Does anyone think there should be a WP:WikiProject Francophonie? It would be like WP:WikiProject Commonwealth that handles the British Commonwealth.

See Talk:Organisation_internationale_de_la_Francophonie_(OlF)#WikiProject_Francophonie? for the discussion.
