Page move

edit

the country is officially called Myanmar (as recognized by most of the world). Wikipedia doesnt take [western] sides. Thus a page move to the Myanmar general elections is more appopriate. Lihaas (talk) 08:44, 1 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Disagree. This is an English wikipedia and the US, UK, the Burma gov't in exile and others recognize Burma not Myanmar. Many of the people that live there also call it Burma or Bama and it is the illegitimate gov't that has changed the name to Myanmar. Different wiki versions handle things like Burma, Tibet, Israel, Antarctica, the Falkland islands, etc..., differently, just as written encyclopedias in the various countries word things from their own perspective. Fyunck(click) (talk) 09:20, 1 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Illegitmate? WIkipedia doesnt take sides to decide what is right or not. Because the US and UK does so doesnt make it gospel.
Furthermore, if it was based on the criteria that this the english language wikipedia and we were thus use the governments of usa, and uk to judge this, then why does the Football page of the AMERICAN encyclopaedia mention soccer and other such games? The point being wikipedia is WP:Neutral it doesnt take sides no matter the perspective of the editors. The country refers to itself as Myanmar, just as the usa doesnt call anyw ar the War of Northern Aggression (which would be a link to thepage about the war itself if wikipedia was taking other perspectives to set agendas)
intl media says otherwise [1]
Furthermore, see the name of the wikiprohect aboveLihaas (talk) 12:24, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
I believe the name of the WikiProject is Wikipedia:WikiProject Burma (Myanmar), and has gone through its own discussion. "Burmese" is still most used adjective form, and I don't know offhand the adjective form from Myanmar.-- Patrick, oѺ 12:53, 8 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
The adjective of Myanmar is Myanmar. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.170.241.160 (talk) 05:34, 27 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
In common English usage, the adjective form is Burmese. (Even the English language sources that use Myanmar for the country name use Burmese as the adjective form.) --RegentsPark (talk) 12:38, 13 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
The title should include both (Burma and Myanmar) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.170.241.160 (talk) 05:37, 27 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I agree that it should say Myanmar. The official title of the government is Myanmar, and so that is what we should be using. It doesn't particularly matter what the UK or US uses, this is wikipedia, a GLOBAL encyclopedia. It doesn't represent a Neutral Point of View, nor does it make sense, to use a name that isn't in official use in the country itself. Yazman (talk) 07:44, 13 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Controversy section

edit

There are some sources discussion the controversy behind 1. the banning, (done) and 2. general stepping down to run in elections. This should be in a controversy.Lihaas (talk) 12:24, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Background (April 2021)

edit

The background section was written in present-tense still, which I changed to past tense. Reading the whole section, however, the flow of the content seems like it could be ordered better. I do not feel qualified to make a more major edit like this, but if someone who does would take a look, it could be helpful. --89yoyos (talk) 17:02, 1 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
