Positions by Round

Is anyone interested in creating or adding Positions by Round tables like last year? Anyone is opposed to it? Where else can one find the breakdown by round online? Khvmty (talk) 18:57, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

It was an attempt at making the MLS look more like a league where play is balanced. In other words, every team played on the same weekend. They don't do it in other North American sports such as NBA, MLB, NHL, so I'm not sure why we need to do it here. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 19:04, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

A separate Positions by Round table makes it easier to monitor and keep track of the actual standings that are otherwise skewed by uneven number of games played (f.e. some teams played 12 matches and appear higher in the standings, other played 9 or 10 and may appear lower than should have been). If we decide not to do it here, apart from keeping a separate spreadsheet per round, is there any other place online this info can be found for reference? I see other teams' 2012 season pages (f.e. The actual standings are represented by the current standings table. What you're describing is a fiction. Again, it's something to make it appear more European, where football leagues commonly feature this. I too see individual team season articles calculating it, but suspect that it's going to be inaccurate shortly. I would like to see those dropped as well. I'm also against adding position by round. There are some leagues (like Serie A, for instance) where great care is taken to have everyone play games on the same day, and there are hardly any postponements. There are also leagues (like the Premier League) where there are many postponements and teams playing odd numbers of games at any point in the season. MLS, for a number of reasons, falls into the later category, making it hard for such a table to be accurate or meaningful. The very fact that there are an odd number of teams this year necessitates that not every team will play every weekend. It just can't physically happen that everyone is on the same games played at any point in the season. So, I'm against adding such a chart for those reasons. -- Grant.Alpaugh 06:19, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

The results table feels a bit large

I'm in support of creating what was done before the two balanced seasons as well. The currently implemented table is not what I would call ideal. It's done in such a way that it isn't obvious at first glance whether there's a rhyme or reason, or if it's just a coding error. I'd go back to listing each team's opponent by week like we did pre 2010. -- Grant.Alpaugh 07:34, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Are we going to the 2009 version of the table because the current version is even more pointless as it doesn't cover all matches. Either go to 2009 version, keep the original version or hide the current one. One95 (talk) 16:42, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

Here's how it would look with the 2009 format and the original (with smaller font). I only did Chicago since I don't want to do it all and then we decide not to use it. The code is pretty massive (I tried to clean it up a bit for easier editing) and if we use this format we should probably make a template similar to template: Fb rbr header, template: Fb rbr ground and template: Fb rbr result. But anyways this gives a good indication of height, etc.

Single Table Obsolete

Does this make any sense to have a single table. A lot has changed in the league from last year:

• No wildcard spots, so no real playoff implications.
• No US Open Cup spots awarded as all teams now qualify

The only thing the single table determines:

• Supporters shield (which could easily be seen by looking at the table side).
• Secondary CCL spots
• Home field in the final only.

I would say these minor points are hardly worth a separate table. These could be identified through a note below the two tables or a different shade of colouring.

Also, it could falsely give the impression that MLS has a single table that has any meaning byond the above. The other American leagues with similar strucutures do not include league wide tables. The Supporters' Shield is a major trophy awarded on single table, and if teams win multiple CONCACAF Champions League berths, the Supporters' Shield standings are used to give the other berths away. The Supporters Shield can be address in other ways. List the current Shield winner in a single line for instance, or list the teams who have the top three total points.

As to every other league (football included), I don't know if that's the case. There is the W-League which has multiple conferences and the winner of each conference plays in a championship final series. Perhaps you're discussing leagues where there's an interlocking schedule as is commonly use in most football leagues. The MLS doesn't have one and so to compare fifth place of by one team in the East to sixth place by one team in the West may not be fair. In fact, it's probably misleading.

I mean I get what you're saying, but there are a bunch of reasons to include it. First, MLS still awards the Supporters' Shield and counts it as a major trophy. It also awards CCL berths based on it. I also don't think the fact that (okay I guess it's my fault for using absolutist language) almost every other league in the world uses it in their season articles is a big part of unifying the way footy is presented in the encyclopedia. And the fact that you had to go to a defunct format in a women's league from almost a decade ago as your evidence that not every league uses it sort of proves that point. I doubt there are regular editors to those articles, and I don't think the W-League had a Supporters' Shield equivalent (if they did, then I'll take back that small point), but otherwise I don't think there's a compelling reason to abandon it. I also forgot that MLS Cup will be determined by the Supporters' Shield standings, so that's another reason to use it. I am sorry but I have not heard any argument that is compelling for having single table. As Walter points out, the only value it has is to determine who of the two conference leaders will host the cup and get a Champions League berth. Both are easily determined by looking at the two conference leaders and don't need a huge table to show that. Grant, you argue that almost every other league page has a single table. That's all well and good, but how many of those leagues have unbalanced schedules and playoffs to determine their champion? MLS is a different league. If anything that argument works against your claim because we need to eliminate the single table to avoid confusing the MLS league structure with that of most other leagues. Oh. I thought you were going to say that if you find that argument compelling, you're thick. Silly me.

Not only is it wrong, it's wrong on so many fronts.

The W-League is not defunct. So your thick about that fact.

Also the CCL berths are not based solely on the overall league standings. Canadian teams have their own entry into the tournament and it's always been an issue that if one of the tree Canadian teams are in the top, they're excluded. Since you have to make an exception for that, you might as well do it in the divided tables. Also the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup winner is the fourth spot so it's another exception. The only really important things to list are the overall winner (Supporter's Shield) and that doesn't require the whole table. Imagine Vancouver and Toronto finishing first and second and then Seattle finishing third with Portland winning Lamar Hunt with Montreal winning the Canadian championship but finishing 17th and 18th overall. There are your five births. No need for the full table. Just the names of the winners. How simple is that?

And almost every other league in the world uses a single table because every other league in the world uses promotion and relegation. Finishing in the top of the table means moving up and finishing in the bottom means moving down. If you finish last in the MLS nothing happens except you get a better draft pick. That means the table is misleading to someone who believes the bottom of the table are going to be demoted. As stated, it's closer to NFL, NBA, and NHL standings than world football tables for that reason alone. Do those North American leagues use a combined table? I guess they're thick based on your flawed and incomplete logic.

Revival of discussion in May

There are three in favour and three against including the single table here. No consensus so far. I would argue that it ought to be included for the Supporters' Shield and the CONCACAF Champions League qualification. Other American sports leagues with conferences do not have qualifications for international tournaments based on the league standings. The NHL and NFL both have full league tables on their websites anyway. With the MLS being a soccer league, the Supporters' Shield a recognized major trophy and qualification for an international tournament there is certainly a strong case for including the overall table here. From what I see, this discussion was begun by a disgruntled Toronto FC fan. Walter Görlitz argues that the entire table is not needed, but I don't see why the bottom half should be excluded since it shows how close a team is to possibly qualifying. You would need at least seven teams listed since it is theoretically possible for the seventh-place team to qualify for the CCL (if the top three are Canadian, and the 4th, 5th and 6th teams qualify through the MLS Cup or U.S. Open Cup). I am going to re-insert the single table and it should remain unless someone wants to build a new template that cuts off the bottom half of the league table and argue that the remaining teams need not be shown. I'm sorry you don't understand. Allow me to explain why your reading of WP:CONSENSUS is flawed.

The single table was removed 2011-12-05T22:52:16 No one contested its removal then. It took until March before anyone even noticed it was gone. That means that it had achieved consensus. It is now on the backs of those who wish to change consensus to show that a new consensus exists, not impose it through contested edits. It is your responsibility to self-revert until a new consensus is achieved.

I also feel that the single table is not obsolete. Single tables can be found for the NFL and NHL on their official websites, additionally ESPN does single tables for NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLB. Winning the league is more important in the MLS (Supporter's Shield) then it is in the other 4 major sports, so this serves to show that a single table is more important for the MLS, yet there is evidence that there is interest in seeing the overall standings in the other major sports. The NHL and NFL do in fact include the overall table on their websites, so the Wikipedia articles are not indicative of league policy. The mlssoccer.com website does not currently include it but that doesn't mean "the MLS doesn't support it"; the league does in fact recognize the Supporters' Shield and its CCL qualification as well as home field advantage for the MLS Cup, all based on the overall table. Even if the other Wikipedia articles don't include the full table, that doesn't necessarily mean the MLS article should not have it either. The CONCACAF Champions League should be reason enough to include it, and it looks nicer than more footnotes to the Conference tables. As they say, "pity the poor reader." Make it as easy to understand as possible. Not only what team has the most overall points, but where the runners-up fall behind it. That can much more quickly be gauged on a single overall list. No, the Amercian teams with the 2nd, 3rd or 4th most points can also gain entrance to the Champions League under certain circumstances. Which means that MLS teams up to the 7th place can potentially qualify for the Champions League. It is used in North American sport, here and here. And Belegorn above pointed out that ESPN makes single tables for other leagues as well.

The conference tables make it more difficult to tell the order of teams in the regular season competition for the Supporters' Shield, as well as which teams could possibly qualify for the CCL currently. Exceptions for Canadian teams are easier to add on the separate table without cluttering the conference tables. Looking at the two tables, it takes some calculating to figure out that D.C. United is in fifth place, but looking at the overall table I know that almost instantly. It is simply easier to compare all the teams on a single table. The argument is for ease of reading and the relative importance of the single table to MLS compared to other American leagues. I'm not arguing from consensus by silence. If you read what I wrote you will see that I am arguing from reaching consensus through editing. It was in place when the article was created. We discussed removing it and did. It was a pretty simple process actually. No one contested it and so it became consensus. Weak as that may be, it is the current consensus.

Your NHL example has already been offered and dismissed as irrelevant because 1) there's no equivalent table on the MLS site and 2) there's no equivalent single table the recent NHL season articles on Wikipedia. In short you're comparing apples and hockey pucks.

Why do we need to know the order of teams in the regular season? First place (Supporter's Shield) is easy. The table is still present and when we add prose to deal with all of the other awards, the presentation of the table in the article will just be a way to take-up space. Fifth place is just as irrelevant as 19th place.

Also, finishing atop the overall standings doesn't determine qualification for the CONCACAF Champions League. As someone who has been indefinitely banned before for edit warring on American soccer articles, I'm honestly astonished by how much hostility and aggression takes place in these edit wars. That aside, I'd like to reiterate my belief that the single table standings should be included in the article for a number of reasons. First, it's part of what someone would expect to see in coming to a soccer season article. Second, it's part of determining U.S. berths in the CONCACAF Champions League in the (fairly common) event that one team qualifies for several berths. Third, the single table also determines draft order and (I'm pretty sure) allocation order (at least at first) for the following season. It's an important part of soccer articles, MLS and U.S. Soccer, and one of only two major trophies awarded by MLS, the Supporters' Shield. If the Supporters Shield winner or the U.S. Open Cup winner gets to MLS Cup, then a berth will be given to the team finishing next in the Supporters' Shield standings that didn't qualify already. If the Supporters' Shield winner plays the U.S. Open Cup winner in MLS Cup (or a team wins both trophies and makes it to the final) then two berths will be awarded in that fashion. So it does play into the awarding of the Champions League berths. And just because we have to use a note to indicate the Canadian clubs' situation doesn't mean it negates the importance of the single table. In fact, it re-emphasizes it. There are now three teams who, if they advance to MLS Cup or win the Supporters' Shield, will pass a berth on to the U.S.-based clubs based on Supporters' Shield standings. I think it's simply the best way to convey this information. A single table provides the draft, allocation, home field advantage, and Champions League info in a way that text will not provide anywhere near as easily. We're not short on space, and it's been a feature of the articles for several seasons now. There are really no good reasons to eliminate it, particularly since it still provides relevant information. All of your reasons not to include it boil down to wanting to save space, when in actuality you're removing valuable information. People shouldn't have to collate the two tables together just because your aesthetic sensibilities are at stake. And there are now 4 people giving legitimate reasons why the table should be included. But for some time to sit out Wikipedia and some faith being shown in me by some admins, I'd still be banned. Take it from someone who learned the hard way. Supporters' Shield doesn't indicate CL birth here because the team is Canadian as are the next two spaces. San Jose, as we all know, has gone on to win the MLS cup against KC while Salt Lake took the Lamar Hunt trophy home. So seventh place Seattle gets the CL birth in this table. Of course, all of that needs to be annotated in notes at the bottom. Move the top six teams around however you would like and you still have the same problem.

Poor non-MLS fans will like at the table and say it makes no sense because in Europe the only way you can get into the CL is by finishing at the top of your first division table or by winning the previous year's CL trophy. Walter, you keep going against the consensus in a clear violation of the established rules. The majority has decided to keep the table in, so unless there are more editors supporting your point of you you need to humble yourself and step aside. Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. As long as the majority agrees on what should be more important for the reader to see in the article, the content stays. Okay, so I'm gonna tell you; I did delete the table intiially and the factors I pointed to still stand after reading this discussion. I hate the fact that the league has basically idiotically developed this new schedule/playoff system. But that does not mean that we should not change with the times. Basically, MLS is a lot closer to baseball (two separate conferences with minor interleague play) than it is to traditional soccer. So this article should reflect that. If there were wildcards/crossovers, I would not say that. But let's keep it real as to what the league is doing. Perhaps, we can include a single table in the 2012 MLS Cup playoff article, just to speak to who will have home field advantage. Is that a compromise people could live with. Also, we could simply note the leader for the Supporters Shield inside of their conference table. Seems pretty reasonable, no? And that way it's less confusing. We can add a footnote as well. Okay, so first off, we all know that's a hypothetical situation because Toronto FC has won games in your table, let alone made the playoffs or won the Supporters' Shield! Sorry, that was too easy. Jokes aside, what is so hard for you to understand about the fact that San Jose would then get the Champions League berth along with possibly RSL and SKC depending on results in the playoffs and the U.S. Open Cup. The only difference is that in your version of the article people would have to look back and forth between tables to compare which team was next in line, while in the version with a single table that information is all right there. Using your logic, we should just produce a list of game results and people can just infer the table by doing the math themselves. Then we don't have to get bogged down in messy tables, particularly if we have to have notes to explain them. Gasp! An encyclopedia that explains things! We can't have that can we? Oh goodness, did this blow up in the last couple days. Walter and Nlsanand are correct that in the current MLS structure a single table is unnecessary at best and misleading at worst. Grant, your argument that people coming to a soccer article expect a single table is the very reason why it should not be included. People will come in with their established presuppositions and assume that the rules used in other leagues apply to MLS as well. They do not. Your arguments would be true if MLS didn't use the single table to do anything. If it was just used to award the Supporters' Shield, it would be easy enough to note the conference champion with the most points as the Supporters' Shield winner. But because it is used for all of the other factors like home field advantage, re-allocation of Champions League berths, draft and allocation order for next season, etc. It makes sense to include this information in one single table (alongside the conference tables). That's the way we've done it on MLS articles for several seasons now, and the only thing that's changed is the lack of wild card places for the playoffs. People shouldn't be required to "work" for information like how the Supporters' Shield race is going, or how close certain teams are for international qualification if there are Canadian teams in the playoffs or leading the Supporters' Shield race. There's nothing wrong with using colored bars like in the Premier League or Bundesliga tables to indicate that fact. They have to use notes to indicate rounds and caveats related to European qualification, but that doesn't stop them from including such information. We're not limited by space. We have to technology. Another thought is that this information could be easily conveyed in the conference tables as well. As an interesting side note, a number of the active European club season articles don't even list the whole table, only the two teams above and two below the subject's placement and so that has been suggested for MLS team articles as well. 2011–12 FC Barcelona season and 2011–12 Chelsea F.C. season are examples. Walter Görlitz you don't have veto powers here. It's tendentious to just undo edits by continuing to claim you have consensus, which is not at all evident here. Stop reverting and try to compromise. You're better with coding templates than I am, can you try to include the overall table information in the conference tables somehow? Is it possible to insert some code somehow so that the CCL qualification indicates only American teams? I'm not claiming veto power. You've read what the others have said so I'm not alone in the opinion that it's not needed. I'm simply asking you to be cooperative and show what you claim. Modify the year-end table provided above to show the winners and do so simply without the need for extra prose.

It is simple to show SS in East/West table. It would be the same as in the combined table and could change as the points leader changes from east to west. The same can be done with any other trophy. However, it makes sense to include it here as prose since the rules are not explained. No code would work in marking templates. The problem is it's so complex that even in past years prose are required in every instance. The prose in the article makes it so much simpler.

There was consensus for my initial edit to delete the table. Moreso, it's logical. As pointed out by several contributors, you could easily convey the information re: Supporters' Shield without a single table. Moreso, it would be fundamentally misleading to include a signle table. Normal soccer fans would not realize how "Mickey Mouse" MLS is as they would simply see the single table. The SS is about the same the NHL's President trophy and that article does not have a signle table. So this thing about consensus. What about "logical edits"? In either case, Walter Gorritz has several people supporting him, including myself. A decision has already been made. That's why I posted the edit to the table in the talk page initially. 1) Can you show me when consensus was made with your initial edit to remove the table? The single table was initially removed on December 5, 2011 by 186.207.146.186. There was no discussion about it, it was just removed. It wasn't until March 16, 2012 that the discussion to remove the single table began. Reading through this old discussion, it does not appear a consensus was made.

2) The overall standings table is not misleading if you explain what it is used for, namely determining the Supporters Shield and the top ranked US based MLS clubs for CONCACAF champions league qualification. In the example above, you can easily see who the top 4 US based MLS clubs are and since, in this example, some teams qualified for the CCL in multiple ways, the overall standings table was needed to determine who the other qualifiers were. If the single table was not used, and only the two conference tables were used, it requires the reader to back and forth between the two tables to determine which teams have the most overall points. And then if there's two teams with the same points, but from different conferences, then it's not obvious to the reader why and how one team is ranked above the other. The conference tables determine the MLS playoffs. The overall table determines Supporters' Shield and CCL qualification. They are each conveying different information, but they both convey important information. As it stands right now, the does not convey any information on who is winning the Supporters' Shield race at the moment. I won't answer 1 because it's listed above. 2 is answered in comparing any of the two season final tables to the Bundesliga table, which is what non-MLS readers expect. The top spots are always promotion or CL entry. As you can see from the hypothetical table, the top spots are not CL entries. If we label it as Supporters Shield, why is a table needed at all? Show me where the consensus was achieved through discussion, because it surely wasn't achieved on this Talk page. I also want to point out that the table was originally removed in December of last year by an anonymous user with no description of the edit. The discussion about the removal of the table didn't start until March of this year, which coincides when the 2012 league began, and I would bet is a time that more people would be reading this article (than in December of last year).

The Conference tables only measure teams against each other in the same conference. They do not measure teams between the two conferences, only a single overall table can do that. Right now, New York is the 5th highest ranked team in the MLS. But I can't easily see that looking at the two conference tables. Why do I care that New York is 5th overall? Because I'm interested to see how far away they are from winning the Supporters' Shield and earning a berth into the CCL. The two conference tables don't give me that information.

The 2012 Supporters' Shield is awarded to the Major League Soccer team with the best overall standing as shown in a single table. I cannot see where a consensus was reached during the discussion in March. The discussion ended with you saying "there's no good argument." Just because you believe there's no good argument, does not make it so. There is an argument, and it shows that the single table is not obsolete. In some cases the single table is needed up to 7 spots, which was shown in your example above with the 3 Canadian teams topping the table.

OK. Maybe you don't understand consensus, but a few other editors do.

I'll assume you're using hyperbole to state that

doesn't actually convey the idea that DC United is the current Supporters' Shield holder any better than a table with 20 rows and more text listed below it does. Looking at the conference table is sufficient to see who has the most points overall. I like that table that Belegorn came up with that shows both the Supporters' Shield and CCL qualifers separately. Is there a way to code that so only the American teams are tracked for the CCL when the table positions change? I disagree that just prose is enough for both the SS and CCL, as this article is about this season in particular, not the SS and CCL in general (they have their own articles) and the positions of the qualifiers for the 2012 season can only be tracked and updated in a timely and efficient manner in a table. I also disagree that having the single table confuses European fans (seriously?) as we certainly aren't arguing to get rid of conferences and those tables clearly show the league is set up differently. The NBA article on here shows both divisions and conferences but they don't have anyone arguing there that it's a waste of space. As to whether the MLS is "Mickey Mouse" and we need to remove the single table to prove that, I disagree and would argue that the CCL keeps the league from being Mickey Mouse because it is a FIFA competition and a direct connection to global football; so all the more reason to include the overall table. --Inquisitor84 (talk) 21:21, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

No league table currently automatically indicates promotion, relegation or anything else automatically. It all has to be done manually. That would include both values. The way Belegorn's table appears is almost identical to the way it appeared last year with the exception of indicating the pot and the use of the ampersand separating the two awards.

We know that you don't agree that prose are enough, despite the fact that (with the conference tables and a sufficient amount of prose) it is.

It's not that it will confuse European fans. It's that the whole MLS structure is BS to them and the table simply confirms that. It's not that's Mickey Mouse, the Disney corporation is way more professionally organized than the MLS and they need to climb out of the pit they're in just to reach the ground floor of Epcot Center. The Champions League entries are presently not all indicated on the table. The fact that CL entries can be achieved in multiple ways (the national cup, through playoffs, and league results) is what makes it all so ridiculous.

As for your the 2011–12 NBA season article, yea, divisions also indicate playoff qualification and conference is redundant. But there's no individual table. Could it be that the NBA site lists those as well? Oh yeah, they do. Since the NBA deems them as necessary, it probably makes sense for the NBA articles to have them. Since the MLS doesn't have a single table but only the two conference tables, it's probably not necessary for us to have both sets here.

You keep saying that using prose and the two Conference tables is sufficient to convey everything regarding the Supporters' Shield and the CCL qualification, yet, as it stands now, there is no mention of how the standings of this season affect either of these anywhere in the article. It does more of a disservice to readers to withhold information than it does to possibly give them too much information. Is it really bad to give too much information? Are we confusing readers when it can explicitly be stated what the overall standings table is used for? So, until something better comes along, the old way should be used. We're not giving too much information by adding the table. We're giving them superfluous information, and that's bad. We can deal with the missing information without reintroducing an unnecessary table.

I tried to add something to the article to indicate the current SS leader, but it was removed with the reason that it gives the impression that these awards have been handed out already and that we need to wait for consensus on the single table. I assumed that the "Updated to matches played on May 6, 2012" was enough to avoid that impression, but I guess I was wrong. I think probably the best solution, is to create a new article titled "2012 MLS Supporters' Shield", and have the single table be in this article. The 2012 Major League Soccer season article would have a section titled "League Honours" where it would state (among other things) who is currently leading the Supporters' Shield race, and then link to the main article about the 2012 Supporters' Shield.
