The "former" could be either Gutiérrez or Maldonado. Can you just rephrase to "Gutiérrez hit the Lotus'" or "Maldonado hit the Lotus'"?

Vettel speaks to his Red Bull, "I can smell burning". He's right. Maldonado's car is smoking. He pulls up and that's heartbreaking for the Lotus driver."
