"Massacre" or "attacks"?

edit

While the main cause for noteworthiness are clearly the killings, regardless of whether fatalities are in the hundreds or the thousands (which is a truly depressing thing to write), the killings are really discrete events that happened over a few days (and appear to still be ongoing, actually). So plural or singular? Furthermore, one could make the case that the primary motivation was to capture the military base. In that case, might it be better to call the event "attacks"? Or should we simply consider the attack on the base a seperate event and focus on the killings of civilians that followed, which would be the "massacre" here? --Varavour (talk) 22:54, 8 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

17 French people > 2000+ Nigerians

edit

It's absolutely sad. This tragic event was totally forgotten by international media. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.21.162.237 (talk) 02:16, 10 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • The event was also in many cases forgotten by the Nigerian media. Many newspapers, at least yesterday, apparently did not report on this news at all, and those that did, in many cases, either referred to the prior first attack on 3 January and gave figures far more limited than those circulating elsewhere, or gave outright denials of one sort or another; out of 12 Nigerian newspapers' front pages for 8 January that I looked at, just one mentioned the massacre in the same terms as other sources have (the 2,000+ possible fatalities, the 30,000+ refugees). As of right now, the President of Nigeria has not even commented on the recent events in Baga- although he did express condolences for the Charlie Hebdo shooting. (BBC) This makes writing this article with facts, and not merely "unconfirmed reports" -which practically everything about the massacre has been reduced to- extraordinarily difficult. --Varavour (talk) 04:12, 10 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
This can be mentioned in "reactions" section.--Vyom25 (talk) 12:14, 12 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

35,000 estimate

edit

According to independent reports and local officials, however, least 35,000 people are thought to have fled the region is a claim cited to this article, but it's not clear to me where this figure is coming from. Maybe I am missing something? I do see evidence for a 20,000 estimate from a local government official supported by this article here. I, JethroBT drop me a line 07:47, 10 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

In the following sentence the official quoted mentions another 10,000 are waiting to be transported to Maiduguri and the UNHCR said another 5,000 fled to Chad- 7,300 now so that number is actually inaccurate. --Varavour (talk) 06:35, 11 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

New information

edit

Hello all, there's new information from many sources as more people have been able to get on the ground and report what has happened, in articles such as this one from the BBC or the latest Amnesty International report. I'd work it but don't have the time, so I added the update box to hopefully spur improvement. --Varavour (talk) 19:03, 4 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Someone be sure to add content from this article. --Varavour (talk) 22:19, 4 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
